Uberti 1858 Carbine for Hunting

Hi all,
does anyone use a 1858 remington carbine for deer hunting? Seems like a short range gun but with conical bullets it might drop some within 40-50 yds or so.
What do you think?
 
I think with a Kaido's conical and a full charge of FFFG Swiss powder, it'd do nicely. Should get a power boost with that long of barrel. Shot placement and range will be very important. Don't shoot the deer if you've not a clean shot.

I personally would prefer to use a P61 Enfield Musketoon or M1841 Mississippi rifle with .58 Minie balls for the purpose of the huntings of the deer. :cool:
 
I have an 1860 .44 Colt clone with an attachable stock. Yes it would do the job but not in my state as the law requires 40 grains but it also does not meet the legal requirements for black powder so I would have to use it for modern season since it is .44 cal but Washington just ignores bp revolvers except stating they can be used for small game.

Really the hunting regs are a mess.
 
I say YEP. With the distance being within reason. A conical and a dose of Triple 7 it will do the job. I would only take shots probably to 50 yards or less. I mean COME ON, Indians Killed BUFFALO with a Bow that MAYBE shot an arrow at 140fps tipped with a ROCK! :D When It comes to deer hunting, its the INDIAN not the ARROW!! You can meet or exceed 45 ACP Ballistics with a Remmy. It'll do the job if you put in the time to work up a good load.

.........que the folks that think you need a HOWITZER to kill a little Whitetail. Any YES, whitetail are a LIGHT THIN SKINNED GAME ANIMAL.
 
It should be okay, really, thing is it wouldn't be legal to hunt with where I live. The only thing which keeps me away from buying one :)

Anyway, with a 200gr conical and a full charge it should penetrate just nicely on a good shot at 50 yards, but good shot placement is a must. All it does is drill a 0.44 cal hole. I think a SWC would allow more powder and be more effective, saw someone selling those for 0.44 cal revolvers.
 
First check your game laws to see if legal or not if you are seriously planning to do so.
Second check yourself. are you capable of making a good clean humane kill with this gun?

Yes up to 50 yd the gun is capable. Maybe a bit further but be realistic in your and it's capabilities.
I used to cast both 45-195 and 45-190 gr swc conicals Now just the 190. Sold the 195 mould to a member on another forum.
Still cast and sell the 190. fps being equal it will deliver about 1/2 again more ft pounds of energy than the .454 rb.

The chamber only holds about 40 gr fffg without the bullet. I doubt you are going to get 40 gr powder and kaidos 240 gr bullet in it at the same time.
Remember this is just a standard 1858 new model army with a longer barrel
 
The gun certainly doesn't hold 40 grs of black and a conical, something like 30 grs of black is all it will fit without grease or a wad and manufacturer recommends 25 grs max with a conical (which is roughly what fits when you put in the powder I use, grease under the bullet and a conical).

Factor in that 777 is a bit stronger then black - I don't think it is intended to compress 40 grs of 777 in the chamber and a heavy conical, and I am not sure it is a safe practice.
 
It will hold 40 grains and a round ball. It will probably take 40 grains of Pyrodex and a conical since Pyro compresses so much more. Dunno bout T7.
 
Don't have a dog in this fight as I have a feeling that at the right range and load, you cold take a deer down with it - but it depends on what is allowed in your state.

Thant said . . . just out of curiosity . . . . what kind of groupings can you get with it at 50 yards and with what load? (grains and RB or conical)?

I had a chance to shoot one of these many, many years ago and it truly was an interesting one to shoot. Uberti makes a similar carbine on the 1873 Cattleman action in 45 Colt which I've given some consideration to for BP cartridges - just for fun plinking not hunting.

Is the Uberti 1858 cylinder longer than the Pietta?
I can get 35 gr in the piettas and fully compress the conical

But my normal load regardless of powder or sub used is 30 gr.
so when I was shooting my uberti 1858 style carbine I only loaded the 30 gr under the conical. Compressed just enough to let cylinder turn.

But I'm not at home now to confirm anything.
 
One is a smidge longer than the other can't remember which. I know Pietta will hold 40 and a round ball, not sure how much with a conical but it should hold 40 and a conical with Pyrodex. I say should, I never tried it.
 
It can be done

The guys here have it right, 50 yds. or under.

I have taken several white-tails with a Uberti/Colt/Walker and also with my Ruger Old Army with a roundball, 50 yds. or under. I recently cast some conicals for the Ruger but haven't tried them yet. I would never shoot anything at an animal without testing and knowing for sure exactly what the rifle/pistol will do. I always carry a BP sidearm during gun season in the rare event I had to put a killing shot into a deer down but not dead. Never needed a second shot but it CAN happen.

On a side note, I did take 2 Doe's at once with my Walker. 6 Doe's came in within 15 yds. of my ladder stand. I pulled up and dropped one. They all just stood there wondering what the heck happened. (Maybe, they couldn't see me 'cause of the smoke), I cocked the hammer back and dropped another one. This time the other 4 beat it for the brush.

I would love to try a Hawken's rifle or an Enfield's Pattern of 1853 with the three bands... have to get one first though!
 
I have taken deer with my Hawken but I never got a shot at one with my 3 band Enfield. In fact the last deer I killed with the Hawken was also my last hunting trip. I know y'all are tired of seeing this pic.

 
Was there ever a Dragoon or Walker Carbine? I remember I held a revolving carbine or rifle at a gun show, I posted the pic here. But can't remember exactly what it was I held. :rolleyes: It was something like 56 cal or something. I do believe it was a COLT too.
