U.S. Springfield 1864

Hello all,
I was given a caplock style firearm. On the right side of hammer is a "U.S. Eagle" and the words U.S. Springfield. On the left of the hammer are the numbers / year "1864". Could anyone tell me more about this? It's in bad shape and I'm not looking to sell it just want to know more. Thanks in advance.

Pictures would help in a good ID, but with the information you have supplied it is probably a union issued rifle from the civil war.

Sounds like a Springfield Rifle Musket, Model of 1963, Type II, Flayderman 9A-341; as made in 1864. About a half a million of these were made, 1863-1865, to arm Union forces in the Civil War.
