Dear U.S. Conference of Mayors,

Re: lawsuits against gun manufacturers

It has not escaped my attention that The United States Conference of Mayors has engaged in the dubious practice of trying to advance their political agendas by filing litigious actions aimed at destroying a legitimate Firearms Industry. The claim made by your officials is that manufacturers should bear some of the cost of gun violence, of which nobody, including the leaders of city governments, would ever accept legal responsibility for. It is an act of extortion to cause economic hardship upon an industry just because they do not wish to subscribe to your theory that their products cause people to act in ways that cause injury or death. If the issue was defective or unsafe goods causing accidental death or injury your efforts might be considered noble. However, it seems clear that your desire is to punish the legitimate consumer and leave firearms in the hands of (outlaws, and) a police state. Which, of course, is the logical result.

Why is the issue about guns anyway? As I understand things, more people die in automobile accidents or from tobacco related illness than are killed by guns. People killed by guns usually are engaged in dangerous and illegal activities. Sometimes they are innocent victims in dangerous environments, rarely are they totally random victims. Many times people die because human aggressions or emotions are out of control, e.g., suicide, domestic violence, and murder/suicide. And in those instances other accessable weapons or devices could suffice. Judging from our history of wars and from events of modern times, and also when considering the origins and evolution of dramatic theatre and literature, as well as current enterainment, I would have to say that tragedy is a compelling and frequent part of life. Struggle from oppression has always been a major part of the human experience and man has armed himself since the beginning of time. This we cannot deny. Any major shift in the balance of power by seeking to severely limit law abiding persons from arms is unnatural and serves only to enpower the predatory elements.

The politics of fear and emotion are the tactics used today by gun prohibitionists. Traditionally both sides of this issue have used these devices to further their causes but these days nowhere is this as blatant as is found in the current use of term "children" in the debate by the anti-gun forces. To them members of gangs and delinquent youths between the ages of 14 and 21 are not always excluded from the numbers when statistics are brought out. Perhaps when discussing guns we should consider too, the thriving sporting element who enjoy and shoot all types of handguns, shotguns, military arms, and rifles. These people are quite well adjusted and in my experience are no different in their passions than are typical enthusiasts of automobiles, aviation, bicycles, motorcycles, craft hobbies, collector pursuits and athletic sports, to name only a few. I would venture to guess that the firearms industy is a valuble commodity and to destroy it as you have proposed by suing it to death is a crime far worse than the number of tragic and often unavoidable deaths caused by guns relative to deaths caused in any way by cars, airplanes, bicycles, tobacco, alcohol, or even certain sporting endeavors.

Sincerely,

********
