The Pentagon has urged Congress to authorize 500 million dollars for building a network of friendly militias around the world to purge terrorists from "ungoverned areas" -- and warned Muslim clerics against providing "ideological sanctuary" to radicals.

Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, a key architect of the Iraq war, told the House Armed Services Committee Tuesday the money would be used "for training and equipping local security forces -- not just armies -- to counter terrorism and insurgencies."
...
In addition, [Wolfowitz] called for tightening control over international communication networks, including the Internet.
Hey, it worked so well when we gave money to the Afghans to repel the soviets. What a great idea to give money to more freedom fighters to repel our newest enemy - the terrorists-who-have-no-names.

All this when there are accusations that we've been ignoring intelligence from an independent terrorist-hunting militia about Osama.

Isn't this kind of like the stuff we did way back when, that put the dictators and terrorists in power and the like? I can see this backfiring thirty years down the road.

You're WAY too optimistic!

"I can see this backfiring thirty years down the road."

It won't take that long.Try 20.

Example: We started arming the mujahiddeen to fight the Soviets in 1980. We had to fight to overthrow the Taliban, which came to power with the weapons we supplied in the '80's, in 2001.

That's 21 years - and the Taliban had already taken over Afghanistan and was threatening its neighbors years before then.

Hummmmmmmm

Where do we apply for this money? Wonder what they'd do if a bunch of Americans applyed for money to form "militias" to hunt down terrorist in the U.S. :D Back in Clinton/Reno's time that is what was considered the greatest threat to the US. After Erick escaped them in the Mountains they hired 500 more agents and formed an anti-terror unit in Charlotte NC. Wonder if they're still there. It might be "funny" to see what kind of a reaction you'd get if you announced the fomation of a new anti-terror militia! Probably cause a replay of Waco.

What we did to Japan and German should be the model for all wars.

Don't go to war unless you need to and make sure you kill everyone you need to so your children don't have to deal with it.

Dick Cheney lost me when he said this war could last 30yrs.

Politicians Never will Learn from past mistakes will they??? :barf:

Heck, it'd be a better idea to Resend the dumb US Gun control laws (particularly the AWB, FOPA & GCA) & set up Official areas for people to keep there marksmanship skills (in Both Full & Simi Auto) up.

If they did that among other key things the Country would most likely at the very least Police & Protect itself, which would result in the .gov freeing up a TON of resources.

How so?

Would be Criminals would realize "Hey if i cause any problems (IE: Steal that TV, mug that woman, etc) it'll take a DNA test to Identify what's left of me.."

Terrorests etc would Realize "If we try to attack the US there will be a Morter-Team/Grenadier/Sniper/Machine-Gunner/Rifleman behind every blade of grass/stone/tree/hill/leaf waiting for us..."

If you ask me, the key is to Make the Criminals/Terrorists etc so Terrified of the USA's Wrath that they would mess themselves at the mere thought of pissing off what would Otherwise be a Friendly, Pleasant, Freedom Loving Nation.

Let's see. Wolfiw wants to arm foreigners to hunt down terrorists, but won't allow the thought of retired cops and ex-military to volunteer to patrol our borders to keep illegal aliens and potential terrorists out. Seems to me, he's spending our tax money in the wrong place.

They want to fund militias across the world but actively fight to thwart the actions of citizen border patrols here in the US.

Today on FOX News, it was reported that middle-easterners have begun infiltrating central America and two were apprehended in Mexi-Cali this week.

Lovely.

Ignoring a guy like this is certainly reasonable:
"We would have had (renegade Afghan warlord Gulbuddin) Hekmatyar in 14 days or less. We would have had bin Laden in less than 30 days" had he and his team not been arrested, said Idema, a colorful former U.S. Army soldier who spent three years in jail in the 1980s for allegedly bilking 60 companies out of more than $200,000 in goods.
Example: We started arming the mujahiddeen to fight the Soviets in 1980. We had to fight to overthrow the Taliban, which came to power with the weapons we supplied in the '80's, in 2001.
Good example, except we didn't continue to support one group over others after the Soviets left, which allowed some of the foreign mujahadeen remnants, reinforced with new recruits from Pakistani madrassas, to run the domestic mujahadeen remnants out of most of the country.

Correct.

After the Soviets left, the US operatives left the area. The Afghani fighters began to disband...

Then, Pakistan looked across the border and said, "Hmmm. Sure would be a shame to let all them good Islamicists go to waste. So they geared them up to make trouble over in the disputed Kashmir territory with India.

Muslims were recruited from all over the world. Of course, when such people are recruited from all over the world, they often have diverse goals. The Taliban was formed and considered itself to be quite pure. So pure, in fact, that it decided Pakistan was in need of a good old-fashioned insurgency itself. Can you say, "Tiger by the tail?"

It wasn't until recently, when the Al Queda boys attempted not one but two assassinations on the Pakistani Prime Minister that the Pakis decided to help us out...a little anyway.

That's the short version...

Well, if I just didn't know any better, I'd say that Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz was just "stupid".

But these people aren't "stupid" - they know exactly what they are doing. Paul just wants to do openly what these instigators have done in decades past - more controlled conflict for controlled change. And they want us to foot the bill, and then develope the usual cases of amnesia; so that in ten or so years time people can argue about why we are sending our military into yet another foreign country, spending more money, and getting turned upside down at home.

Apparently George Lucas's first film, THX 1138, is being re-released and shown by the big theatre chains on September 10th. I hope plenty of people go see it this time around. Like Orwell, Lucas seems to have had much insight into the world people like Paul Wolfowitz and their stringpullers are taking us.

Gun control here, while arming our enemies abroad. What else is new...

Gotta love the .gov.
