TZ-99 Range Report

So I helped a coworker look for his first autoloader as detailed in a previous thread. He decided on a TZ-99. It arrived today and we took it right from the counter to the range after a quickie job of cleaning and lubing. My first impression of the pistol was that it looked very much like a 226 which I guess it is supposed to. Victor said that the clerks also commented on it's resemblance to the SIG. Take down was the same and overall the workmanship seemed quite good inside and out.

The controls on the pistol were interesting in that it has an ambi-decocker which also functions as a slide release. For comparison sake I had brought my 226 and my CZ (the other pistol he choose not to go with). The TZs grip was not quite as SIG like as it's intial impression. It felt more like a Beretta 92 series to me, a bit thicker than the 226.

My tightest groups were with the CZ but the groups shot with the TZ and the 226 were similar. Victor shot the 226 the best, the CZ next and the TZ least well though was getting better towards the end of the session.

We only put about 200 rounds through the TZ as it was a short session because I had a shooting class to go to but there were no jams.

In summary:

Pros: Price ($300 delivered w/ 2 15 round mags), reliable, accurate, cheap full cap mags (will not function in a 226 though)

Cons: somewhat cheesy sights (they are dovetailed but I have no idea what sights might fit those dovetails), TDA action (which I personally don't like but many of you out there do so ignore this), no service in the US, maybe difficult to accessorize for

He seemed happy enough with his purchase but I got the impression he wished he had gone for the CZ. I am perhaps mistaken though.

The tz99's arent that common. I shot one a couple of months ago. Along with a SIG, CZ's, Taurus, P/Ord and a Casull. The tz
shot just like the rest of the group...which is saying alot given
present company. I felt really top heavy at first..but after shooting it, that feeling went away. It seemed to be a very high
quality pistol....one almost tempted me. The only issue I would
have would be the lack of parts/support just in case something
did happen. I have opted for the CZ's .....great report on the tz.
Shoot well

Just out of curiosity, what kind of ammo did you run through the TZ99? I'm still trying to figure out what my TZ likes.

Most people who have shot mine commented on the really long trigger pull (by the time the pistol fires, the trigger is almost touching the grip!), but other than that, they've been impressed. For a $300 gun, it's worth it!

We had an array of 9mm ammo. The tz and sig were fed S&B, A/Eagle and Win. white box. Even some 9mm reloads purchased
at a gun show that were packaged in a lovely plastic baggie. It really didnt have a preference.
The hollow points were Hydrashocks and Gold Dots. The tz
functioned very well...I thought the trigger was very much like the SIG...a little more pull weight. It seemed to break a little farther forward than your gun...Hope this helps, Shoot well

I got the $269 TZ99 from AIM abit back, they still have them if you want one.

Quality and finish is excellen for a pistol this price, and groups nicely as well. The only gripe I have is the size. It was slightly too thick for my hand, which makes a firm firing grip difficult to attain. If only they made it abit smaller, with all those skinny Sommalians, you'd figure they make a smaller grip.

I may be mistaken, but I believe the company that manufactured the TZ99 went out of business - so service & replacement parts might be a little touger than usual.....

I recently came into a mint condition CZ99 which is almost identical and it was a sweeeeet shooter also.. great controlability and accuracy was more than adequate..was shooting winchester white box FMJ
