And of course, we're all familiar with this story..

I believe the restaurant should stay open. To close it would be like surrendering to the antis. This is probably one of the leading causes to have Texas implement a CCW law, which would not have prevented this casulty, but perhaps limited the number of people who ultimately suffered...

Luby's closing Texas cafeteria where gunman killed 23 in 1991

The Associated Press

KILLEEN, Texas (August 24, 2000 11:47 a.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - Almost a decade after 23 diners were gunned down during lunch, the cafeteria where terror reigned for a day is scheduled to close.

Despite the horrifying memories, residents have continued to dine at Killeen's Luby's Cafeteria. But customers learned Wednesday that the cafeteria will be one of 15 Luby's to close Sept. 8, manager Ken Borski said.

George Hennard drove his truck through the window of the cafeteria's dining area at lunch hour Oct. 16, 1991. Moving calmly through a group of more than 100 people, he killed 23 and wounded 20 others before killing himself.

The parents of state Rep. Suzanna Gratia Hupp were among the victims, but she supported keeping the business open.

"The community is going to lose a very valuable restaurant," Hupp said. "My brother and I placed a phone call to (Luby's) upper management the day after the incident and begged them to keep it open."

Almost 40 employees will be relocated to other Luby's restaurants, the closest of which is in Temple, 23 miles away, or will have to find employment elsewhere.

Luby's operates 231 restaurants in 10 states in the South and Southwest, with about three-quarters of them in Texas. The company was founded by Bob Luby and a partner in a downtown San Antonio basement in April 1948.

Shares of Luby's Inc. dropped sharply Monday after the closings were announced and the company said that earnings in the current quarter would be "significantly below expectations."

Too bad. Like the Alamo, it was the site of a tragedy that helped shape our state's (and probably our nation's) history. That shooting led to our state demanding a referendum on concealed carry, which our former governor denied, thereby sealing her fate and electing our current governor (and current Nat. Republican nominee for Prez), and getting the CHL bill passed in our state.

Five years later, we find that there was no justification for denying Texas citizens the right to their personal protection.

Killeen was a terrible tragedy, but it spawned some important events.

Then again, in the 50-100 times that I've driven through Killeen since then, I've never said "Hey! Let's stop at Luby's!" The free market rules. ;)

It's sounds more like a market menuever-shut it down cuase there is no market for it there. Same thing happened at the Pancho's Buffet right up the road from me-i worked there for a time and ate there several times a week. Two days of the week it was packed...dead the rest. Last Pancho's in San Antonio is a 45minute drive from here..I get to go a couple times a year.... :(

Anyway...the fact that it was the site of a massacre really has no play in whether it's making money. Been reading a lot about a looming gas/oil crisis and economy crisis being kept from us by TPTB....and also that a lot of the bigtime movers and shakers are getting out of the markets and selling or reducing business holdings...might be this is part of something like that.

Yeah, I just bet their lining up for a minimum 46 mile commute to keep their high paying, prestigious jobs in a cafeteria chain.

I got stationed at Ft Hood, Texas in March of 1992. Killeen is the local town there. My wife initially avoided Luby's like the plague. After we were there a couple of times, we really liked it. Great food, price.
It gave her the creeps at first.

I think Luby's is having some $$ problems. They are closing several that I know about. One closure near me was announced two days ago but they just built a new one in the same city about a year ago.

Years ago their food was the best but it has gone down hill for the past 10 years or so.

RKBA!
