TX CC training for my Dad?

We both agree it's time he get his CC license. I believe he's about 61 now, which may make him eligible for 'senior citizen' discount.

I know nothing about the training requirements in TX, specifically the Dallas area. If someone could point me to some useful information (other than Packing.org) I'd appreciate it.

All he needs to do is go to one of the many places in the area that offers the course - they will answer any Q's he has. I think he is eligable, but I'm so far away from being able to get the discount that I didn't pay much attention to the details of that. But, IIRC, there are checkboxes on the back of the paperwork you send to Austin that detail how much money you are enclosing and I think one of them is the Senior discount part. The only way his process would differ from anyone else's is by checking a different box and send less money.

I don't know where he is located exactly in the metroplex, but the Academy for Firearms Training in Grand Prairie comes highly recommended.

The price for the actual class is pretty standard - usually $120-130 depending on where you go. As mentioned, TexashCHLForum.com is probably the best place around for TX specific CHL questions.

Fantastic! He lives in GP so that will be right up the street.

He would have applied for his permit years ago, except he was under the impression from neighbors that it cost about $450

I'll have to ask him if that includes the firearm too.:p

I am a moderator & asst. admin on the above mentioned texaschlforum.com. That will be an excellent resourse for him.
We have several excellent instructors in his area that are regulars on the board. My Mom (76) just took her renewal this past Saturday. I understand about helping parents. I train a lot of Sr. Citizens (cause I are one;) ) & will be glad to give him special attention. He is too far for me to help hands on but am sure willing to put him in touch w/ the folks that can.
I am longtooth on that forum also.

While the TexasCHLForum does appear to be an excellent information resource, be very weary (sic) of posting any dissenting opinions (especially privately). They seem very quick to censor (ban) those who disagree with anything that's presented on the forum as fact. Open discussion (whether public or private) is how good information is sorted from the bad on a discussion forum, and when dissenting opinions are stifled, bias is automatically injected into the discussion

I have to wonder what you've been posting. I've been a member there for over two years and have never seen the first bit of what you allege.

Of course, people complain about the moderation on TFL and THR too, and I get along pretty well at all of the above.

It ain't Glocktalk or arf.com. Different crowd, different expectations, different ROE. "Ya pays yore money and ya takes yore choice."

You're right. It was a misunderstanding on my part, and I jumped to an invalid conclusion. I've since retracted my statement (it was obviously off-topic as well) and will now retreat back into lurk mode...
