Two Questions

3030 vs. 4570 Marlin lever action. New to hunting trying to get started. I live in Louisiana so I don't anticipate any 300 YD shots. I "dig" lever action rifles for aesthetic reasons and think a 4570 would be a good choice for a sure shot / sure kill up to 100 YDs. I don't intended to target over 200 YDs. Between the two which would you recommend, 3030 or 4570. Any guidance appreciated. ; )

My only experience....

is with the 45/70...... and I'd buy mine over and over again every day all day long. Marlin 1895gs

30-30 is the way I'd go. Ammo costs less, can be found almost anywhere and will take down any critter you may stumble up on (deer, hog, black bear, and could dispatch a coyote & bobcat or two if you practice for accuracy. But, that's just me. Buy what YOU like and what fits well & suits you. Then have a ball with it.

There is nothing in LA worth the brutal recoil from a 45-70 lever gun

those guns hurt on both ends

the 30-30 will kill anything where you live at the distances mentioned, and the ammo is a LOT less expensive

Thanks for help

Thanks, folks. I figured the 4570 would be a little too big. I have a .50 cal CVA Wolf muzzle loader I guess if I come across something that needs it. 3030 then is the way 'cause cheaper common ammo is a must! Thanks again to all.

You might want to consider a Marlin in 35 Remington (336C). Not as easy to find ammo as the 30-30 but carrys more punch without the killer recoil.

How good is "good enough" ???

Suffice to say that the 30/30 has taken killed more deer than any other cartridge rifle. It's performance has been proven long ago. For all the other reasons listed this would be my first choice. The last deer I took with a 30/30, was in Alabama but it was a Contender pistol. .... :)

Be Safe !!!

For your area I would go with the .30-30. Will do what you want to use it for. The recoil and ammo cost wouldnt be worth it for what you want to use it for.

are you woods hunting or swamp hunting? what are you going to be hunting? a 45/70 will destroy a deer for lack of a better word. if you are looking to hunt for meat purposes then a 45/70 is way too much and your meat will be very bloodshot. a 30-30 is perfect for deer within 200 yards but some people think it's too marginal to stop a charging alligator. a 45/70 would stop a 10 foot gator in it's tracks though...it's going to be a matter of where you're hunting and what wildlife risks exist. a 30-30 will be more than enough for a swamp cat or deer, a gator may need more juice.

I've got both, live & hunt in Florida, similar terrain (swamps & brushy country).

I like the easier-to-handle recoil of the 1951 Marlin 336 in .30-30, and I love the thought of carrying a rifle that a grandpa used.

I also love using the 2008 Marlin 1895SBL in .45/70, it is a one-shot-stopper.
You hit a Hog with it, or a deer, they just fall over DRT. Gotta luv that :)

Lately, I prefer the 336, mostly for the Down Home feel...and I tend to take a little more care in shot placement with it...
where with the .45/70, I just quick-aim for the heart thru the Ghost-ring sights, and if it gets moderately close, it drops 'em.

And there is a certain Tim Allen More Power feel to the newer .45/70 :) Gets the caveman in ya fired up!!
But I just keep reaching for that old 1951 Marlin 336...one of these days I'll slap a tang sight on it...
but for now, its running just as it came from the factory back in the old days.

A few interesting obseravations I would like to post on this topic. I have a few of both calibers, so I dont have an ax to grind. I would wholeheartly suggest a 30-30. Ammo cheaper, gun lighter, ammo more easily obtained. I dont know what guns and ammo that is being shot in the 45-70's that garnish the "brutal recoil". I regularly have a slight 14 and 12 year old girls shoot my 1895 Marlin and other 45-70's. No complaint from either girl. The ammo I shoot is factory equivalent 405 grain bullets loaded to @1400 fps. I read and study old texts and writing from early explorers and MANY are the reports to the superior killing power of the 30-30 over the 45-70 even on Alaskan game. Early woodsmen liked the 30-30 for its lightweight and faster killing power and flatter trajectory over the 45-70. According to these early pioneers, shooting a moose with a 45-70 required a long waiting period and followup, while the same shot with a 30-30 required a far shorter time and trailing. These writing were of course writen in the late 1800's and early 1900's and ammo available to each in that time era. Just interesting reading, though I doubt that such experences would be the same with modern day ammunition.

^This.

If you elect to go with the .45/70, I suggest you learn to handload.

...... but I suggest you learn to handload anyhow: twice the shooting for th same money. More is better.

I’m with Jimbob on this one. If you reload the 45/70 is the way to go. You can tailor your loads and take anything with it and reduce the cost.
Since you said nothing about recoil in your original posting then I don’t see the issue. True if I had my choice of shooting a 30-30 or a 45/70 at a shooting range for extended periods,, the 30 would win hands down.
But unless your being attacked by a heard of deer or gaggle of alligators,, I really don’t see the problem with the recoil of the 45.
Plus the fact that I really like the history of that large straight walled garbage can sized round.

This is not a question that is possible to answer.............so.......
.BUY BOTH!
(get a 35 Rem too, just because they are cool)

:D
Oh wouldn't it be a great world if we could all follow this kind of advice?
