Two Questions for Experienced Shotgunners

Question 1: What are your recommendations for a semi-auto shotguns?
Question 2: What are your suggestions for optic shotgun sights?

I'm not really experienced, but if you want specific suggestions, you'll have to say what you want to do with it. That said, you can do a lot with a decent auto. As a shot from the hip, i'll have to say a remington 11-87/1100 would be decent, as well as a berretta 391.

That said, if you have money, you can go to the "dark side" and get a bennelli superblackeagle II. But i have no experience with it.

Just remember that free advice is worth every penny. ;)

Question #3...What do you want a shotgun for. Clays, Hunting, Home Defense, posting cool pictures on internet forums? :)

Benellis are great guns for duck hunting and three gun matches, but will pound the snot out of you if you shoot clays.

Remington 1100, Beretta 390/391, Browning gold if you want a clays gun.

Remingtons have more aftermarket goodies.

The old Browning Automatic Shotgun still has a following, Clones made by Remington and Savage.

The old Winchester Super X (Not the current super x2) is a real gem if you can find one.

If you want to spend a whole lot of money for status look into the Cosmi.

If you browse through the old threads here and in other shotgun oriented forums you will find a wealth of information, some of it actually usefull. :D

Although also not especially "experienced" I like the 1100's. We have two at Casa 9mm (his and hers) and they are sweet to shoot.
I also like the Beretta 390/391 seires guns but do not own any.
For sights, we run simple twin-beads on vent-rib barrels on our 1100's.
I also like the old Ashley Outdoors / Xpress on rifle-sighted barrels which is what we run on several 870's.
Good luck,
Mike

Looking to Enter 3-Gun Competitions

The reason I'm asking is that I'm interested in getting "into" 3-Gun Competitions as run by the IPSC.

I'm gonna use my Mossy 500 with a Sidewinder, with irons.

Bushnell Holosight is nice as a 1x optic, and now they have a smaller/low profile holosight model out.

K80Geoff, How is the Super X better than the Super X2? And I see you lumped the Browning Gold into a category of recommended guns for clays sports. My understanding is that the Super X2 is essentially the same gun as a B. Gold, so what gives?

I like my Benelli

My Benelli handles as well as any other shotgun and the recoil is a lot less than most folks think. Alot of folks think just because the Benelli doesn't use gas to operate it will kick harder than those that don't. This is a misconception. It will not only stay cleaner longer, but if it fits you right to begin with, it will have less kick than a lot of the models out there.
The point is to make sure whichever model you choose fits you. Have yourself measured by a smith. Find out exactly what you need to begin with. Then when you look for guns, you will know what exactly to look for. You will find it a lot cheaper to have one fitted to you than most folks think. Make sure you find one that is long enough for your length of pull and the hieght of the comb and drop is correct as well. If it fits you, you will be more accurate and you will take a lot less of a pounding from the gun. I really like the new pistol grip of the new Benneli. I think it would make a very good tacticle shotgun. The REmington model 870 in the tactical setup is very hard to beat for the 3 gun set up.

As far as sights, I like the open sights with a ghost ring, but if you want an optical sight, I like the hologram sights better than anyother. It is lighter on the gun and doesn't detract from both eyes being open when shooting as much as any of the other sights.

Recommendations based on my experiences and observations and conversations with fellow shooters. YMMV.

The Super X and Super x2 are very different guns.

Another case of a manufacturer trying to capitalize on the known excellence of a particular gun by giving a similar name to a gun that has nothing in common with the original gun.

EG the "New" L C Smith. The Remington 332 etc.

Once again, if you want to know what works go down and observe at the local range/club.

If you can get a hold of one I love the Browning Auto-5, mines from the early sixty's and works like brand new, the only problem is there expensive and hard to come by if you get an older one, Ive heard very nice things about the berreta, never had the chance to fire one though.
