Two Gun Rig

I am thinking of getting a pair of S&W 696 in .44spl. They would probably be wore in a double holster rig. They would back up my shotgun or rifle. Does anyone have experiance with these guns or the .44spl cartridge? Would they be good for undercover work?

696's? Double rig? Undercover? Wow. That's... substantial. If you can hide them, go for it; they make a great gun.

The 696's are, like most Smith revolvers, excellent guns. (Buy used!!!) The .44 special cartridge is more than adiquate for self defense. A pair of 696's would make a formitable means of self defense. The primary draw back is the cost of factory ammo.
I carry a 6" Smith model 29 on one side and a custom built snubby 29 Smith in the opposite side in one of the concealment rigs we offer. They are surprisingly confortable.

I have 696, 3", very conceilable and nice stopper. with the right load for the particular gun it is an extremely accurate weapon and easy on the hand.

Sam....my favorite 9mm is the 9X32R

if i had to carry a revolver i would prefer to carry a .357mag. you can get 2 more shots with it and you can also practice with it cheaper with .38spl ammo. when i say 2 more rounds i'm refering to my 686+ 7 shot. i think they make it in a 2 1/2" barreled model.

Yeah - you can do this...
Double up on some 696's... Hmmm... How?
I can see this done with a shoulder rig thats worn under a well taylored sport coat.
Other than that - it would be very difficult to pull off.

The only time I would carry two handguns is for cowboy shooting or one primary with a backup. If using a shoulder rig, I would much rather have a reliable auto with two spare mags on the opposite side. As for the 44 spl cartridge, I haven't shot it but I hear that it is to the 44 mag what a 38 spl is to a 357 mag. Let us know what happens though!

If they are still gonna bother ya after your shotgun, they deserve both 44s.

Just be sure you cna wear a double rig. Some of us can't wear shoulder rigs, get john Bianchi's excellent book on Sixguns and gunleather. Will help you decide. Have 696 and love it.

My experience with the .44 Special cartridge is that it is one of the finest revolver cartridges, highly accurate and extrememly flexible and adaptable if you reload your fired crtridges.
