At 12:30 PM Thursday June 30, two Border Patrol Agents were investigating a tripped sensor when they were ambushed by an unknown number of individuals armed with rifles and wearing black military garb. Both agents returned fire, and each agent was shot in the leg. There are no reports that any of the assailants were hit.
The location is described in one article as near Duquesne Rd. and AZ Hwy 82, in another as 3 miles east of Nogales and 1 mile north of the border, and in another as 5 miles east of Nogales and 1.5 miles north of the border.
Both BP agents were taken to a hospital in Tucson, where they were in stable condition as of Saturday. The assailants are thought to have fled back across the border. The FBI, Border Patrol, and Santa Cruz County Sheriffs office are investigating.
There's speculation that the black-clad figures were former Zeta members. Zeta is apparently a group of ex-Mexican military personel recruited and trained at Fort Benning, then put to work against drug cartels.
Since October 1st, there have been 196 assaults on border patrol agents, and 24 of them have been shootings. In the same period of Oct 2003 - June 2004, there were 92 assaults and 5 shootings.
