Twist Rate in a Varmint Rifle

I am working on a custom savage rifle and i am to the point of ordering a barrel. My initial thoughts were to go with a 1:12 twist rate. I found a deal on midway for a barrel kit exactly what i am looking for except it is a 1:14 twist. I am working with a 22-250 and plan on shooting bullets up to 53 gr ish.

Will this be a fast enough twist to stabilize the bullet in a 24" Barrel?

Hello, cordesr1. That 1-14" twist will be fine for 53gr. I have a 1-14" twist in a Ruger No. 1 .222 Rem. and it handles 55gr. just fine.

1:14" twist will be fine up to 55 gr bullets. Any tighter and you will risk blowing up the bullets as you push the velocity up.

cordesr1, I've got a 22Br with 26" long barrel 1/14 twist and I'll shoot 50gr to 55gr bullets in that rifle.

Well good luck

My Remington 700 in .22-250 with a 1:14 twist shoots 52 grain bullets great (at least 8 loads with different bullets that average under 0.45 inches and has several favorite loads in 55 grains that shoot under 0.45 inches on average and at least 8 different loads for 55 grain bullets that shoot under 0.55.

You should be able to find something in 55 grain bullets that will shoot in a .22-250 with a 1:14 twist.

In fact, it likes 52 and 55 grain bullets better than the 45 and 40 grain bullets.
With the 45, I have yet to find a bullet that shoots under 0.5 inches on average.

I think you might be able to go up to 60 grain bullets with a 1/14 on a 22/250. The extra velocity you have will help stabilize the longer bullets. I've used 63 grain semi-spitzers in an older Rem 700 but accuracy was not as good as 53-55 grainers. Nosler 60 grain Partitions shoot fine @3200 fps.
The 1/14 twist might gain a few fps but not a significant amount and possibly prevent rotational induced bullet failure with some of the lighter bullets.

My old Swift with the 1 in 14 twist and a short barrel, shot the 63 grain Sierra flat base bullets extremely well. The powder, going on memory, was 36 grains of 4064. but again that's just what I remember without looking at load data. That same rifle also liked 52, 53, 55, and 60 grain bullets. My 223, with the 1 in 9 twist doesn't shoot anything under 65 grains that well.

The 55 grain weight class should be safe in a 1:14" twist.

However... the Barnes 53 gr TSX and TSXFB are very long for their weight. If you plan on shooting the 53 gr Barnes bullets, drop to a 1:12" twist (or tighter). And that, of course, means you may lose the ability to launch light weight bullets (30-40 gr) at high velocity. There's no free lunch. ;)

Thanks for the replies.

I was set on ordering the barrel kit with every ones info till FrankenMauser chimed in. I shoot Barnes TSX's in all my other rifles and planned to do the same with this.

I guess ill be back looking for a different barrel with a 1:12 twist.

Thanks again guys.
