Turning necks

I'm curious as to the degree of consistency y'all consider acceptable for neck thickness. I haven't been turning necks for too long but with my setup, about the best I can do is within 0.002. That's certainly a lot better than un-turned necks in some brass which I have seen having a spread of 0.007 or 0.008.

I have certainly noticed a difference in accuracy with turned necks. Mostly in the absence of flyers.
 
Are you measuring the neck diameter or neck wall thickness?

I measure the neck wall thickness at several points around the perimeter. My standard is 0.012 +/- .0005". For brass with thin neck wall, I do 0.01 +/- .0005".

:eek: .007 to .008 :confused: I have to say that's more then I've ever heard of . That's .004 on each side , I don't even see that being possible , you would be able to see .008 with the naked eye . I think the most I've seen was a total of .004 . I may be misunderstanding what you're saying though .
 
0.0185" is too thick. Guess that's why you turn neck. Too thick for the loaded round to chamber. Worst case is the bullet is clamped in by the neck of the chamber and causes high pressure when the gun fires.

0.012" is my norm. Sometimes I need to reduce it to 0.011" for tight chambers.

I see , I thought you were talking one case had a .008 variance . I was thinking holy cow I could see that just by looking at it .
 
I agree, too thick. What you will find is one side will be 0.017 or something, and the other 0.014. and the next case 0.015- 0.0115.

They'll chamber but it will be snug....Sort of a crimp via throat . And then you'll wonder why you have fliers.

It isn't like that with premium brass. But the cheap stuff can vary quite a bit
