Turning a .40 SIG into a 10mm?

If someone made a barrel would turning a .40 P229 into a 10mm be possible?
I think if the magazines work wouldn't it be ok?
Is there a 10mm SIG barrel maker out there? Whats involved in this?

Basically yes. The 10mm is about the same size as the .45 aCP and needs the same sized platefrom to haldel it. while the 229 is the correct caliber the gun as a whole is too small to handle the power of the 10mm along with the frame being too small to handle the longer cartridge.

Now if you were asking about a 220 in 10mm then I would say yes it would be possible with enough $.

Another key point against such a conversion: Most Sig “P” series autoloaders have an aluminum alloy frame/receiver. I am quite skeptical that they would have great durability, for the loads created by frequent 10mm shooting. Perhaps the new P-220 (all stainless steel) might be adequate, but I suspect my traditional P-220 (steel slide and alloy frame) would not.

Well I could buy a P220ST and do a barrel conversion. I've got an original P220 so I'm off to see how some .40 rounds will fit in the mags.

Will the 10mm extract and eject properly in a P220?
I put some .40 rounds through my P220 mags and they fit great.
Now I just need a conversion barrel.

Hi,

I don't claim to be an expert but as I understand it the breechface of the automatic has to be set for a certain width that matches the rear of the cartridge. That's why a .40 can be switched to .357 sig easily the .357sig is designed with a .40 size rear so it fits .40 size auto slides. I don't know if a smaller size (10mm) would work in a larger breach (.45) as it would be loose I suspect and the extracter might not catch it easily.

Does that help?

Sig P220 conversion to 10mm...

Yes, the breech face on the slide of the .45 ACP would be too large in comparison to that of a 10mm cartridge.

Now, if the .38 Super slide could/would fit to that of the new ST frame, I believe that all that would be required is a slight machining of the breech face to accomodate the 10mm cartridge (.406" vs. .425" respectively).

C.O.L. of the .38 Super is actually listed (in the latest Accurate Number Two loading guide) as longer than that of the 10mm, so feed angle may be okay. However, the case length of the 10mm is some .090 longer than that of the .38 Super, so the ejection port/ejector length may have to be examined in consideration of proper ejection of fired cases. Not sure on all this, as I've never been involved in this type of conversion. Anyone out there that has done this, it would be really great to here about it!

Then again, Sip P220 .38 Super collectors may consider it sacrilege for this to be performed, as I don't think that too many of these pupies may be around anymore.

Still, an interesting thought on the 10mm in a Sig body... I'd really like to see it!
