Turkeys Gobbling

A friend is trying to convince me that a Tom will gobble only on the roost and will shut up after he gets on the ground...I don't buy it. I had a turkey sounding off at 10 AM to a cackle from my "Sassy Slate"...he wouldn't come in out of the brush so I never saw him. I hit him with the full repitoire, but every time I'd cackle he'd respond.I do not believe he was on the roost, but had some hens and would not leave them. Comments please.

plenty

Tom's gobble plenty from the ground.

Sometimes though, if pressured, they will not once they fly down. If hunted enough they will not gobble at all!!!!

Also, it is not unusual for a tom to fly down from the roost and land w/ hens he has gobbled up, at which point he shuts up, cause he's got what he wants.

But unpressured birds gobble plenty, oft times throughout the day.

I've even had 'em gobble in the moonlight (on the roost of course)

I would stop listening to your friend. Nothing could be farther from the true. How does he think we all locate our Tom's? When they Gobble....!
