Would someone please tell me there preference of a good turkey good for a new hunter. I only want to spend about $400-$450 on one thanks.

Which Kind Of Turkeys?

Do you plan on hunting real, flesh and blood turkey's or some imaginary creature that requires super-duper weapons to kill?

For pump actions, the Remington 870, Mossberg 500/590, and Winchester 1300 are the big three. Any of them will be fine for you, and you should be able to find them for less than $400. There are specific turkey models, but they will cost more, and I am sceptical of any practical advantages they might offer. So far the base model 1300 has been great for me.

Another model which might be in your price range is the Maverick 80 (which is essantially a bare-bones Mossberg 500), which goes for about $160, IIRC, at Walmart.

Any shotgun that you want to use can work as a turkey gun. It must be capable of being choked enought to put a killing amount of pellets into the head/neck of a turkey at X number of yards.

Camo on the gun and all the other options are nice but not necessary. I had a hen step on my leg and over the barrel of a Blued Remington 870.

Some folks like long barrels on their turkey guns for more range. I find it makes them a pain to carry in the woods and I prefer 22" or shorter.

A good sight, whether it be a double bead, fiber optic, scope or red dot is mecessary to get your pellets where they need to go.

Everything else is just up to what looks good to you and how much you have to spend.

Good Luck!

bought a mossberg 835 for turkey last year, hunted with it, like it a lot. shot a whole bunch of 3 1/2"ers down it, even though it's not always necessary to use them for turkey. i got mine for right around $300 on the dot in camo. i have a winchester superx2 that i love and can also handle the supermags, but it put a much bigger dent in my wallet, and it's not camo. now it probably realistically wouldn't make a difference, but i'll still probably bring the mossberg this spring for turkey. grab an 835 though with the 870, compare and see what feels better, i can't say anything bad about the remington but i do like my mossberg.

Turkeys and nothing else? Browning BPS Stalker with 26" barrel -in 10 gauge!
This gun has the size and weight to put that 2 oz. of #4 plated shot into a 30inch circle at 60 yards with the full "for lead shot only" tube. Mine is BY FAR the best gun for turkeys ,or geese, that I've ever seen fielded.;)

old Mossberg 500

I use a Mossberg 500, painted with bow camo paint, Tru-Glow fiber sights and a cheap "extra full" choke tube. Loaded with 3" mag, 1 7/8 oz of #4 lead shot it does the trick. Bought the gun used and got $200 invested in the setup.

shotgun

i use the maverick 12ga for turkey, it has a removable choke, and it is pretty cheap at 140 dollars at academy sports. there are two problems with this gun; #1 it does not come in camo (had to paint it myself) and #2 it hurts like hell when shooting 3mags because it is so light weight, other than that it does the job.

which one?

thanks fellas theres alot of options been posted. I am currently looking at my step-fathers used 1300 camo for 200 cash. Is that a good price or should i buy a new 870 or 835? Kinda leaning between the 3 guns i mentioned do to overall response from this board.

Buy a SpecOps Stock

Regardless of the shotgun you choose, be sure to get a SpecOps Stock to suck up all of that recoil.

used 1300 camo for 200 cash.
That sounds like a decent price, assuming that it's in excellent condition. However, if you really want a camo shotgun, but want to paint it yourself, you can probably find an unpainted version for about $200 NIB.
