Yesterday, i traveled to COG HQ for a wildlife subcommittee meeting

It seems the Fund for Animals is stacking the deck on what solutions will be presented to COG for White-tailed deer management

Gee, they want to immunocontroception the deer
(no hunting)
They also think we should construct wildlife tunnels under 270!

i did some pre meeting web gathering on the issues
and have sent COG this webpage i constructed:

Did you know that Immuno injected does have had 7 heats in one year?
This causes long ruts in the bucks...

As if the deer would do what they're told .. .

Those silly Bambistas!! I'd be real interested in hearing how they're gonna get teh deer to use them underpasses :):):) This is about a dumb as the woman who wanted the county to take down the "Deer Crossing" signs out in Great Falls so the deer would quit crossing there and getting hit.

Can't tell where you are ...

In New Jersey they have overpasses for deer. Looks like another highway or road over the freeway, but it is covered with dirt, grass and small trees. FYI.

Perhaps they could pass out rubbers during the rut? ;)

Jeff,

I'd venture to say that DZ is in Maryland, which is where the metro-Washington, DC, version of I-270 is located (there are 270s in other cities, as well).

270 connects the Washington Beltway (495) North with I-70 at Frederick, Md.

There are numerous stretches of 270 that have HEAVY deer presence.

Here in WA the state is considering a freeway overpass for squirrels so that they may travel from point A to point B on a military base that is transected by a major freeway.

Colorado has under and over passes for deer and elk in various locations.

Guess what? They work. The animals migrate, and they get hit less often by vehicles. Good for both the animals and the owners of the vehicles.

Shows that now and then even bambiists can come up with good ideas.

i would think those sections of colorado are a bit less densely populated by homo suburbus.

This area is not a proper habitat for whitetailed deer,
it is 75 to 90 percent, fully subdued, urban chaos. We are talking tracts of 1000 vinyl sided 4 bedroom 300K homes.
MD 270 is 10 lanes of 75 mph traffic fed by 2-4 lane feeder roads every two to five miles.

Where would the deer on one side of the highway, be heading to on the other?

Home Depot?

IMHO the poor little suburban MD deer need to be given another spin on Shiva's wheel and return as free range CO elk.

The best way to keep deer from geting in our way on the roads is to manage the herd correctly. In the state of New Jersey, you can legely harvest 15 or so deer if you apply and recieve the proper permits and max out in every season. It does not seem to be much of a problem here in the southern part of the state. aim small
