Tungsten Loads

I recently had a friend give me a few hundred rounds of police seized contraband shotgun rounds. Among them is about 60 rounds of three inch, 1 1/8oz, high brass tungsten rounds.
My question is, How would these rounds be as home defense rounds. Obviously a three inch high brass round is a serious round. Please give me opions (maybe on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being very poor) as to how effective these would be.
I am not a waterfowl hunter, so have no experience with tungsten.
Thanks for the help.

1 1/8 oz of what .. - what size shot is in it ??

police seized contraband ...why wasn't it destroyed ?? If its not factory ammo / I wouldn't shoot it...

BJP, not all PD's have relegated themself to destroying perfectly good "product"...

I am glad for this... My 500 was in police custody over 10 years with me unaware my stolen gun had been recovered after it was used in an Ag Assault case.

When they ran the numbers before destruction, the ffl had gone under and had to remit records to ATF.

Research showed my name not the offender and I was tracked down to reclaim my gun...

Among the stolen goods was my "lock box" of important paperwork which included all the #'s to my guns... Thus I had no way to report the S# to the PD initially...

Why destroy "contraband"?

police seized contraband ...why wasn't it destroyed ??

Why should it or any thing else that is not illegal be destroyed? The best route is for it to be sold at auction and proceeds go to the general fund of
local goverment.
The idea of destroying anthing that has value is inconcivable to me.

As for being good for home defense, any shotgun round is going to get the bad guys attention. Just trade or sell these high dollar rounds and get whatever you need for HD and practice. Lots of things to consider on this choice, but lots of advice right here.

Why should it or any thing else that is not illegal be destroyed?

Then why was it seized as contraband?

I agree with BigJim - the shot size will determine its effectiveness. Being a 3" high brass means nothing as far as effectiveness goes - high brass is an old thing back when hulls were paper and BP would burn through the paper.

Shot size and velocity - what are they?

The ammo itself is not illegal. It was siezed in a drug raid prehaps or along with stolen goods or whatever. Again, destroying anything that is not illegal is silly and a waste.

He said "contraband" .....that's what I assumed he meant ...

Contraband is: goods or merchandise whose importation, exportation, or possession is forbidden; also : smuggled goods

Stolen goods are not contraband ..... If he meant something else - he should say something else ....

BJP,
This ammo was taken when the local city pd found it during raids, warrant arrests, pfa inspections etc. The ammo was in the posession of someone commiting a crime, or who is not allowed to have firearms. There is nothing wrong or illegal about the rounds.
I have a friend on the force. Every 2 years or so, they clean out the old stuff. He knows I shoot alot of shotgun, so he throws me a bone.
Now, back to the original question. The shells are just labled with a T where the shot size should be. I cut one open. It looks like number 2 shot.
I have a surplus of sd type shotgun rounds, because of my officer friend. I was just curious if these rounds would be considered good sd rounds. I have no experience with T shot and do not plan to go duck/goose hunting.

Ok, so they're not contraband .....

as far as size ......they're between #4 Buck and BB ...see attached ....

are they any good for defense ....I don't know / maybe, maybe not .....but I don't see the guys really into tactical shotguns saying BB is ok ...maybe fair ...but not ok ...

It says "T", because that is the size of the shot inside - it is not #2.

So, the T is a size? A friend of mine who hunts waterfowl informed me that the T meant tungsten. I'm confused at this point. Someone please teach about this.

Yep - if you scroll down on the chart Jim sent, it is a size that came into being when lead was outlawed for waterfowl and they were struggling to come up with alternatives that were non-toxic (originally steel)

I keep a jump drive and a micro SD that has (among other items) - a list of the serial numbers and models for my guns. They are kept in secure locations away from the house. The jump drive holds a lot of data, photos and documents like insurance etc. The micro SD holds less info but I have the critical stuff on it.

T shot tungsten is .20 cal as stated before it is denser than lead. It is marketed for shooting coyotes at ranges up to 100 yards. It patterns very tight so as a home defense round it would probably put a2 or 3 inch hole straight threw the the assailant.

T-shot

Yeah, T-shot or T buck as it was sometimes called. T-shot w/ lead pellets is scarce these days.

Bigger than BB, (.177?) smaller than #4Buck (.24?). Pretty serious stuff actually. If it is the Dead Coyote load, it is hevi-shot , heavier/denser than lead by a good bit. HARDER TOO! A tungsten/space metal mix.
Recoil is stiff with this load. Safe in conventional shotgun bbls w/ fixed chokes,
, but hard on screw in chokes that are not rated for hevi-shot.

Kicks to hard to suit me for a SD load, but would be grim death at house hold ranges I would think.

One last thought is that it could be T-shot in a steel pellet, waterfowl load.
If it is steel (see if it pulls a magnet) I would just shoot it as blasting ammo.
