Tube over barrel -- a better idea?

Why is it the shell tube hangs under the barrel, wouldn't the reverse be more logical? I see three principal advantages for this:


1. Lower bore-line, reduced felt recoil.

2. Theoritically more efficient feed, as gravity will work in your favor.

3. Possible utility of a transparant tube for easy ammo check.
 
Interesting idea, just turn the action upside down and put sights on the tube. The draw back would be that every spec of dirt and dust would fall into the action and chamber. Not to mention the sights would be about 3/4" above the barrel.

The ejector would have to be redesigned. Perhaps a common load/ejector port on the side. Ithaca uses a common bottom port, so this shouldn't be difficult to accomplish.

The high sights shouldn't be much of a problem, just takes getting used to. Even rifles can shot accurately this way, let alone a scatter gun.
 
What about using a side loading port and having it eject straight down, that might work to keep the dirt out of the action a bit.
