Hi guys,,, I just picked up a unfired savage fp 308 from a guy that I want to use in some longer range play time,, I love the feel of the gun

question,, he gave me a box of Tubb final finish shells,,, what do you guys think,,, should I just break in as usual ,,, shoot clean,, shoot clean kinda thing or use these to help with slicking the bore up

I will admit I dont know anything about these things or what the procedure is to use them,, will have to find that out ,,, unless someone here can enlighten me

thanks

While I'm not a Savage rifle owner, they have a reputation for for good accuracy, right out of the box.

I would say you should shoot the rifle before sending these abrasive bullets down the bore. From everything I have read, the Tubbs system is effective when an accuracy problem has resisted all the other attempts to remedy. The article, that I read, that recognized their utility, considered them a remedy of last resort. It seems that the rifle in this article was mil-surp sporterization, that the owner was having real problems with getting acceptable accuracy.

As a side note Gale McMillan, a target rifle seller in competition with Tubbs, said that using these bullets or any abrasive in one of his barrels would void the warranty immediately.

I have never had the need to use abrasives on any rifle that I have ever owned. Some rifles do improve as they wear in. I would say try first and see how it goes. If it ain't broke, you know the rest.

Thx guys

I was hoping someone would kinda confirm what I though,,, like I said I dont know anything about them,,, but they do lap the barrel

this barrel looks smooth and shiny,,, feels slick with a patch

think you guys are right,, im gona shoot it,,, lol

thanks

a box of Tubb final finish shells...
Tubbs' kit usually comes with 50 bullets, 10 each of differing grits.
Is that what you got?

I have used Tubbs' system on five different rifles, all with improvement to accuracy and cleaning -- but these rifles had problems to start.

So.... shoot it first. Unless you find something amiss, put Tubb's aside for another day.

Nope ,, I only have one box,, looks like a box of 20 cartridges, , havent even looked at them,, ptobably never will......

Im hoping this rifle never needs them

I've used the Tubb's FF system to clean up a barrel that fouled terribly, and it worked great for that. It now cleans easier than some of my high dollar rifles, but I wouldn't expect any dramatic change in accuracy though. Tubb's also sell a throat maintenance system (TMS) that you shoot every few hundred rounds, it's designed to extend the life of your throat and barrel.

I have also used the 50 "roll your own" pack on a rifle that gave me fits for accuracy. Solved that problem, also it cleans much faster than before and does not seem to foul the bore as much also. Shoot first, then decide if you need FF.

"...FinalFinish Loaded Ammo System provides about 80 percent
of the effectiveness of our 50-bullet kit, but does so utilizing
only 20 specially loaded cartridges. After thorough testing we
determined the combination of Aluminum Oxide grits that results
in the most efficient and effective bore conditioning treatment
possible -- in the shortest time possible...."

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But don't be afraid to use it if you do (need to fix it)

I only used the three finer grade lapping bullets in my Savage 10FLP. I don't know if Savage used a different grade of barrel on the Law Enforcement Series but it had no visible tool marks in the bore (fresh tooling?) No change in accuracy from the treatment, but copper fouling was reduced. I still use Tubbs TMS bullets every 100 rounds too. After 3000 rounds it will still put 10 shots inside a quarter at 100 yards.
