No they are not the same size. In S&W reference the M85 Taurus is a J frame, they call them "small frame". The 5 shot 44 specials from Taurus are basically K frame. They call them their medium frame. They also have 5 shot 44's and 45's in what they call the "compact frame" size, but as far as I can tell the only real difference between Taurus medium and compact guns are the barrels and grips, the frame seems to be the same.
