trying to qualify

i need to qualify on the sig p229dak for the coast guard. I am shooting a 73 and need a 114. the grouping seems weird, with 2 fairly tight groups of about equal size about 1 foot left and right of the center then a few random shots in the center.

what could be causing this and how can i adjust my shooting?

its a 25 yrd range

If you can describe the following it will be helpful:

The course.
The stages that you are grouping left and right from, if you know.

12 rounds, 12 minuites, first stage 25 yrd
6 rounds, 24 seconds second stage 25 yd
third same as second
6 rounds, 12 seconds, 15 yards last stage

30 rounds total

Given your statement of two groups that are each one foot of center, I'd bet on optical displacement of some sort. You might be cross dominant (right handed but left eyed or vice versa) or your eye protection could be causing it. By any chance, are you using cheap eye pro? Are the lenses highly curved? These are just guesses but both are logical explanations for what your situation.

i had on glasses, i usually wear contacts but had to wear glasses at basic

the weird thing is the groups were pretty tight too, about ten in each and they were only like 8 inches in diameter the strays were probably from the rapid fire section

it was the first time id fired a pistol and rapid fire was quite hard, especially with a .40

My bad. It could be the glasses but frankly, with those time limits and distance, your entire group should be 8". I'd say you need to learn how to shoot a pistol.

Is barricaded shooting involved? As in standing right, kneeling left, etc? Is one handed shooting involved?

I'm asking to narrow it down.

Help for YOU!

SPUSCG,

Shoot me an e-mail I may be able to help. We train the USCG D.O.G. so I am familiar with the course of fire.

I will be glad to help at no charge. Let me know where you are located maybe I can send one of my instructors to you.

Thank you for your service to our country!

its all from isocelese stance

what would everyone suggest as a training weapon? the range has several i could rent out, wheelguns and semis

I could give my $0.02 on this matter, and so could everyone else but the fact is, you have been given one offer that is HUGE!

DCJS Instructor has offered to send you an Instructor. Gee, how come I never get those offers? OK, take him up on it and ignore the rest of us.

i just found out that my right eye has gotten weaker (right is dominant eye) and my perscription has been changed. what effect would this of had on my shooting? improvement?

How are things now that your prescription is in order? One of my guys had something similar happen a few years back; a few range session later his performance had improved remarkedly.

i havent had a chance to retry yet, i dont own a pistol but im going to the range with a friend soon so can try then

OK My .02 cents

1. You are in the Coast Guard

Get with your primary firearms instructor and see if he can get you some range time with his instruction.

2. If you cant really see the target you wont hit the target not at those ranges.

3. Take up the offer of the free instruction. there is a whole bunch of things you could be doing with your grip... trigger pull....sight picture... well I covered that one.

4. Practice practice practice...

5. You should be training with what you qualify with....

I had to shoot a similar course when I was in the Navy but I was using the P226 in 9mm. I seem to remember I had a very difficult time with it as the distances are pretty long. The best advice I can give you is SLOW DOWN, especially on the slow fire portions of the course, but also on the rapid fire portions as you have more time than you feel you do when shooting. Also, take up DCJS on his offer for one on one help with an instructor, I wish I could have gotten an offer like that while I was struggling to qualify.
