We are trying to locate a Smith and Wesson Model 629-1 44 Mag, 6" barrel, stainless with black rubber grip Serial AJL2172. This weapon was purchased in 6/1986. A friend? claims that this weapon disappeared from his gun safe while the safe was stored at our home in 1996-7. We believe the owner sold or traded the gun in Alaska before he brought the gun safe to us. The FBI has alleged that my husband used this "missing weapon" to commit a crime, since it is the only handgun that my husband might have had access to. He didn't have the gun, nor did he commit the crime, but in federal system you are guilty until you prove yourself innocent. I would appreciate it if indviduals who have purchased used models of this weapon would check the serial numbers. Proving that this weapon was not in our possession would exonerate my husband. Please spread the word and the serial number.
Thank you

The odds on turning up a specific pistol this way are astronomical. But good luck.

If the gun is missing, how is it believed to have been used in a crime? A crime was committed with a handgun, and the evidence is the testimony of someone saying a handgun was in his safe, in your home, and therefore available to your husband? That's all they got? A decent lawyer would tear such a case to shreds. Did you or your husband have the ability to open the safe or was it locked? If the safe remained locked while in your house that would seem to solve that problem.

Not sure if finding the gun solves anything. It's current location isn't the issue, is it? The question is did your husband have it at the time the alleged crime took place, no?

Sorry to hear of your problems. And a good attorney is what you need.

The gun cannot actually be considered missing, since the FBI must have it. Otherwise there would be no ballistic evidence that it was used in that crime.

Well, um, I am not that certain. Since for years guns have been shipped with a fired shell casing in a labeled paper bag that ID's the gun, maybe the criminal left behind a corpse, a fired case from the gun, and that little bag with the factory shell..... :p

Did that so-called friend insist you pay the price of that so-called missing gun, prior to any problems with the police? And now I reach for the dictionary, to read the definition of extortion.

Edited to add that while some FBI agents might have "leaned on" you folks in a disturbing fashion, there is nothing in your post to show that they have anything to prosecute you with. I mean, the safe has been gone from your house for 17 years and they are looking for criminal use of the gun???? I think that the statute of limitations is only 7 years, except for murders. So, except for a murder case, they are investigating something that happened at least 10 years after the safe left your house. That is not much of a case, judging from the details you supplied.

Oh, and where are my manners?

Welcome to The Firing Line. I hope that you can find less disturbing gun-related threads to converse about over the years.

Eagle, I'm going to go ahead and close this one since there's really no need for an ongoing discussion. Google and the other search engines will cache your post. Since the serial number is a statistically unlikely phrase, a search on it will lead to this thread.
