Trying to get a dual purpose shotgun

I'd like to get my daughter a shotgun for both turkey and deer. Problem is can't find what I want in a combo. I really want 20 ga pump action with a field barrel with sights and a rifled barrel with a cantilever scope mount...in camo. Any suggestions?

you can get a mossy 500/rem 870 youth model, and buy a rifled barrel for <$100.

i see used youth model 500/870 all the time at cabellas for <$150.

you can get a brand spanpanking new one for <$200 at wallyworld, and a rifled barrel online <$100.

thats $300ish for it all, including tax and shipping.

Not here in Ct. 500/870 in camo new cost $350. Rifled barrel for Mossberg $179, for Remington $259. No guns at wallyworld in Ct. Could use plain rifled barrel but can't find sidesaddle mount for either in 20 ga. Used 20 ga youth basically nonexistent, saw one at Cabela's in camo smooth bore with sights for $259...didn't buy it on the spot.. gone the next day. Found a nice Escort youth 20 ga semi, but cant find rifled barrel for it. Dicks has standard 500 combo with cantilevered rifled barrel in wood/blued for $269 when it's on sale, but it's not youth or camo.

Been visiting gunbroker, gunsamerica and 5 gunshops since April. Called Mossberg today... won't make a custom package.

Since you`re having a hard time finding something to meet your youths specs , have you considered buying an adult combo of your liking and having the stock fitted and cut?

Shouldn't be too hard, I've killed turkey AND deer with a beak-open single shot .410 with a 24" barrel and no choke. Get a 500 or a 870 and you can do whatever you want relatively cheaply.

Suppose I could get two N.E. Firearms single shots, one camo smooth bore, one blued rifled. That would be under $400. The Mossberg combo plus dipping would be pushing $500. Could I mount a scope to the receiver and use it for both slugs and turkey loads without re-zeroing it? That way I could buy a camo field gun and buy a rifled barrel.

I have not seen a cantilevered scope mount that will really hold zero over a long period of taking it on and off. They are just too flimsy. I think your best bet, if you want a spope mounted deer gun, is to get two separate guns. You don't need a camo'd gun for deer. Even for turkey, they aren't really required (just think of all the millions of turkey that were killed before someone ever thought about camoing a gun).

Am I the only feller that sees the dipped guns as SHINY? If stealth is your desire, 3 cans of DRAB paint will make a dull camo... olive, khaki and black or brown...
Or a can of flat black engine paint... I feel the dull look is far better than mossy oak on a gun. It isn't the gun that gets you busted... it is the movement of shiny things... JMNSHO...

I pretty much agree with you guys about camo not being a necessity but the girl thinks it's cool. She's currently got a choice of 3 borrowed guns she can use, 870 youth smooth bore, 500 youth smooth bore or an H&R 243 single shot youth so I've got time to shop. She did get her first deer this morning so I'm upping the effort to find something.

Ordered the Mossberg 500 bantam turkey in Realtree Hd the other day, I'll get the rifled barrel with scope next year for deer season, maybe have it dipped. This way I'll get the right L.O.P. for her now plus the coupon for the full length stock. Able to get it from local shop for $315. I've found that it's better to get what you really want and have no regrets.
