I have a 22 long rifle with a barrel that reads, The marlin firearm company: GLENFIELD M60. The serial number for the rifle is 71495256. M60 are tube fed while the rifle I have uses a 7 or 10 rd magazine clip. Is it possible that someone put a M60 barrel on a M70 rifle. Post 1998 clips dont fit in this rifle either, they are loose and the bump on my 7 rd clip is much larger than the newer clips. Thanks everyone.

I have a M60 and I would say your assumption seems logical and correct. The M60 probably was/is the most common/most made and sold/ rifle in USA. Write to Marlin and ask them. They seem to have absorbed the old Glenfield long, long ago. Personally, I like the tube magazine - it is high capacity and legal!

Write to Marlin and ask them.

That might not help. The current company calling itself Marlin no longer has access to most older records. I don't know how far their records do go back but it isn't like S&W that keeps everything.

FWIW, there never was any such thing as a separate "Glenfield" rifle or shotgun company - the "Glenfield" moniker has always been a store brand name used by Marlin on it's entry/economy line of guns.

All "Glenfield" guns are made on the same machinery, out of the same metal, as "Marlin guns.
The only difference(s) are the level of metal polish/finishing, and the type wood used for the stocks, usually Birch ILO Black Walnut.

Marlin also made at least two dozen "different" model numbered .22 autoloaders over the years since 1959, that were exactly the same action as the Model 60 - with changes to stocks, magazine types/lengths, and store branding, of course.
[Model(s) 49, 49DL, 60, 70, 99, 99DL, 99C, 99G, 99M1, 695, 989, 989M2, 989G, 990 to name some]

.

Yes, that is entirely possible. And given that your rifle has a detachable box magazine, entirely likely. It would take all of 5 minutes time with a hammer, a punch, and a vise.

Great little guns, BTW.

Everyone has been very helpful,, since there is a serial number on the rifle can I take it to a local gun shop to find out make and model or to the local police station...

They will be even more clueless than you. There is no "database" that is searchable like you can do with an automobile.

The only chance you have is to contact Marlin and hope that what few records they still have include your gun.
