trusting your firearm

How many rounds do you put down the pipe of a new/used firearm or before you consider it trust worthy with your life?

I do 200 with a semi-automatic of a brand that has a reputation for quality and reliability. I haven't bought a brand not like that, but if I did I would probably want to fire more through it.

If there is a hiccup, work done, sent back anywhere, etc, the counter resets and I start over till I get 200 problem-free rounds. This includes at any point during the life of the gun, not just during the initial shakedown period.

Revolver I'll trust after one or two cylinders.

carry rounds, training...

In general, I'd fire at least 250 rounds of factory ammunition before I'd carry or use a handgun. It's also important to fire a few boxes of the round/brand you plan to use for duty-defense.
Ammunition prices have jumped way up since the 1990s/early 2000s, but it's still a smart idea to fire off a few boxes of what you use every few months at least.
I also suggest using the 124gr 9x19(9mmNATO) FMJ or milspec, then using a 124gr +P JHP for duty-protection. The size & wt is roughly the same.
The same goes for the .45acp, with the 230gr FMJ & 230gr JHP +P.

The late gun writer; Robert Boatman made the point(s) that training with the ammunition you plan to carry in your firearm is important.

One is to many, a million isn't enough. I borrowed that from an AA class, I left and had a beer.

At least make sure the thing works. Trust me. don't buy a Ross 461i, it turned out to be a $375 gun that the price was $235.

LSS, they sent me a new one. I shot some serious .357s and put it away, and now it's a back up of a back up of a.........................................................................

For sale $375

500.00

most of the HGs I have I trusted before I bought them.

Still...

500 and none have ever failed

It depends on the firearm, I trust my revolvers as soon as I inspect them and check the zero. My semi-autos go through more steps making sure they feed any and all of my reloads with all bullet types and all the magazines work, generally around 200-500 rounds.

If you left and only had one beer, you didn't need to go to AA in the first place.:p

OK, back on topic:

Couple hundred rounds of target ammo, followed by several mags consisting of a VARIETY of different HP's. What I carry goes last. DPX or HST usually, sometimes GD.

NO, I don't shoot 200 rds. of DPX or premium HP that costs a lot in 20 rd. boxes.

I usually just fire however many rounds it takes for the gun to feel comfortable to me. I have had really good luck with guns. Out of every gun I've owned and the thousands of rounds I've fired I've had one failure to fire and that was on the one gun I didn't purchase new. It was a Sig 2340 in .357 Sig and was over a decade old when I purchased it.

Gun parts can break anytime, I heard little as five rounds, 20, 30 rounds their NEW or used gun breaks. Firing pin/extractor etc....

I think 200-300 in a semi is a good breaking in point.

No real answer to this question. Random things can happen to a gun to cause to not work. You can not trust a gun that you havent fired much and it work flawlessly or have a gun you built trust with and fail you when you need it to work.

I had to drag a buddy to the range just to see if his Turaus 605, and his mossberg 12ga would even fire. Both were new. They fired, and he watch me shoot for another 1.5 hr's.:D

He's happy with that, but ha, they worked.

I use the "reset" approach ScotchMan mentioned, unless I have reason to believe that it was definitely an ammo issue. In that case, I like to run through another box of that particular ammo, just to be sure there's not a pattern forming.

For everyone, it's different, but my pref is 500 rounds of FMJ and a box or 2 of my favorite carry ammo with NO FTF/FTE/etc.

YMMV.
