True Heroes

The Lone Ranger

A few days ago I asked TFL members for some help in finding the details of the true heroes of events like Edinboro, Springfield and Pearl. It's simple enough to find the names of the scumbags responsible nigh on impossible to find the names of the heroes.

Well here they are.

Joel Myrick retrieved his personal sidearm from his truck and detained Luke Woodham during his shooting spree at Pearl, Mississipi. His only real reward was a threat of prosecution for possession of a firearm on school property.

James Strand fetched his shotgun and detained Andrew Wurst after he had cowardly shot a teacher at a school dance in Edinboro, Pennsylvania.

Jake and Josh Ryker, who tackled Kip Kinkel whilst he shot up the school cafeteria in Springfield, Oregon.

Jake Ryker is picture above.

Its taken me 2 days of trawling through archives on various news sites and eventually I found them. It was simplicity itself to find the perps, nearly impossible to find these guys.

That speaks volumes for the way in which the media can distort the truth. Perhaps TFL should start a heroes page of it's own. I'd nominate these guys as deserving a place.

This is an outstanding post and reminds us where the media's attention should be (but never is) focused.

After the initial reports, why mention the name of the killer(s) ad infinitum? Show them no respect, let them have no identity. Tell us of these heroes, their families, their hopes, their accomplishments, their dreams.

I think this is a GREAT idea. Give credit where credit is due.

How about it Rich?

Lone Ranger,

You certainly make some very valid points.

I have often thought through how I would react in similar situations.

As I certainly have the appropriate skills, training, hardware, and mental mindset to deal with a robbery or assault that happens in my presence (not against my family or myself), I have pretty much decided to remain neutral, take cover, and call the calvary.

The “reward” some of these “good samaritan” folks receive for intervening in these types of situations is usually getting beat-up by the authorities later for some minor infraction. The more of these incidents that I see, the more I am inclined to not intervene (unless it is an extreme situation that requires immediate intervention).

Then on the other paw, the media never credits the “law-abiding” gun owner with any credit whatsoever in these situations.

I can see where a news organization could get in trouble for glorifying the heroes. It promotes vigilanty justice... unfortunately, what they're doing now promotes criminal acts.

Even at the point that 100 poeple witnessed the shooting go down the media insists on using "alleged" and "suspected" . I even heard on Channel 7 here in So. Ca. the term "alleged suspect ". If a person is under suspicion where does "alleged" come into play . Also here in KA during a pursuit a guy in a pick-up stops dead in his tracks . This forces the fleeing ALLEGED SUSPECT to stop and exit his vehicle . He was promptly arrested and the guy that stopped so it could happen was given a warning for intervening in a police chase . Makes you wanna move to a mountain top in Montana .
