Truck gun? Marlin 22 Mag

Thinking about picking up a Marlin 22 Mag and cutting it down to 16.5" for a truck gun. Put a fixed power or a 2-7 variable scope on it. Don't really need it but I want another project and am a huge fan of carbines.

Any idea how much velocity I would lose doing this? Pros and Cons to my idea? Anyone have a gun they use around the property like this?

What got me interested was this video here...

You wouldn't lose much if any. The .22 Mag probably maximizes at around 18 inches -- give or take. Longer than that doesn't help and is soon losing velocity.

Great cartridge choice though for emergencies. As powerful as a .44 Special from a rifle at close range, the same power at 100 yards as a .22 LR from the muzzle, and a clothesline trajectory to 125 yards. Add to that the ammo is tiny, light and quiet. So, I did the same thing for a truck gun -- had a take-down Rossi .22 Mag cut to 18-1/2" to maximize power, sight radius and capacity while limiting flash and noise. Also skeletonized the stock. One big difference...

Mine is a pump. I would not buy a semi if I were you -- they are too unreliable. The long cartridge in a small frame .22 rifle just have too many failures to be counted on. Sorry.

You go ahead a shoot a critter, any critter from coon to deer, with both a .22M and a .44S and then tell me they have the same power. What a bunch of bunk.

So, put down the "apple juice," go do some homework, come back, and prove me wrong -- contribute to the dialog.

"out the window guns"

I knew a gunsmith (of sorts) that specialized in that sort of mod, he called them "out the window rifles". His biggest travesty was cutting down a Marlin Levermatic in .256.

I've been a huge fan of 22MAG since early 1970's. Bullet hits like a small grenade. Head shots will topple nearly animal that walks.

Its also my favorite rifle for shooting tiny groups at 75 yards.
