Truck Gun (Again)

Looking at different options for a handgun that will only stay in my vehicle. I want to spend between 200-300 and am considering some options such as the Sigma, a 3rd generation Smith, or a Ruger P95.

Eventually I'll make a poll, but right now I was looking for some other recommendations (or agreement with my choices).

Thanks.

I kind of like the Hungarian PA-63 as a truck gun. Generally, they can be found for less than $200. The 9x18 is slightly more potent than a .380. The PA-63's have an aluminum frame so rust isn't as much of an issue (although the internals are steel so it isn't rust proof by any means). Put in a $6 aftermarket trigger spring and the trigger pull becomes quite nice - certainly MUCH better than on a Sigma.

Talked about this on another thread but about rifles, just throw a pack of silica or a sock full of kitty litter to keep the moisture out. One of the J&G 9x18s might work.

Why not just get an old Glock?

If I had to have a beater gun to match my beater pickup truck I would look for an old ugly Glock 20 or 21, preferably a 20.

You can't beat the 10mm in a semi-auto for penetration and knock down power.

I have a beat up XD9 in my truck. I'd really rather have a S&W .357 wheel gun, in there but the only two I own is a 629, which is a real hogleg, and a j-frame .38, which I'd rather keep elsewhere.

First choice would be a P95 or a used P90 for $50 dollars more. Second choice would be a CZ82. Third choice would be a Kel Tec 9mm. All I have found to be under $300, super rugged, and pretty dependable.

Any police trade in or military surplus handgun would be a good choice, and many can be had for around $300 or less.

Just a question for individuals who keep a truck gun; are you unable to carry in your state? I would think that states where you can't carry would also prohibit having a loaded gun in your vehicle. If you can carry, why do you want a dedicated truck gun when you have one on your person?

I can see the appeal, but I would be worried about theft and it's hard to justify that risk when I'm carrying one on my hip anyway. If theft wasn't a concern, my truck gun would probably be a short rifle or shotgun, going with the mantra of "your handgun is only to fight your way back to your rifle."

Not knocking anyone elses choices, just looking for clarification.

Isn't this why Hi-Point was invented?,,,

While being perfectly adequate performers,,,
They come as ugly as a pistol can ever get anyways,,,
What's a few scratches or nicks going to hurt on one of these guns.

And to keep it from getting knocked around,,,
Why now use a couple of self-tappingsheet metal screws,,,
And secure an Uncle Mikes nylon holster in the glove compartment.

It will be quicker to get to in a time sensitive emergency,,,
And keep it from knocking around gathering bits and pieces of crud.

Just a thought,,,

Why do you want to give guns away to car thieves?

Sorry, but it has to be said: this is a fundamentally bad idea. Best place for a gun is on your person.

I think of a truck gun as a long arm of some kind. I keep my pistol on my person at all times. However, a cheap rifle as a back up or for some fun plinking isn't a bad thing.

I tried a Mosin Nagant 91/30 but it was just too dang long to ride under the seat. Currently I keep my Marlin 795 in a slip case under there. I found that I needed an impromptu rifle for some "Hey let's go plink at some cans!" fun rather than anything defensive. About the only use I could see a truck gun (in my case, of course) is to dispatch a wounded animal on the side of the road. If they are bad enough off to need to be put down, they probably aren't going to need much more than a .22lr to do them in:(

If I were going to pack a truck pistol (which I have from time to time) I generally either went with an old Nagant revolver loaded with .32 S&W. Cheap and easy to replace if lost or stolen or a Norinco Tokarev. 7.62x25 would be pretty good if you want something that will zip easily through a steel door. However, I favor the 9mm versions just to have a pistol of "common caliber" should I really need a SHTF back up.

Bought two and they were REAL cheap!

I have an old 1997 4x4 Nissan PU truck. My old 1930 4" Colt Police Positive Special (38 Special) revolver usually rides along.

$299 Sigma w/$50 rebate (when available)

S&W will smooth the trigger at no charge and pay shipping both ways.

Plus you get the added value of having no thieving, self-respecting, gangbanger wanting to be seen carrying a Sigma.:D

my ruger P95 doesn't get shot much since I got my glocks. if I didn't work on a military base it would live in my truck, after I got some kind of lockbox for it.

Here's the problem I have and some people might agree. I work as a field service technician. I'm in and out of a lot of places all day, some places that I can not carry. Also my company doesn't allow the carrying of weapons in our offices, so the gun would have to be left in the truck. I really do not like leaving it there, but my situation just doesn't permit me to have it on my person at all times.
