Trouble Free Floating a Marlin XL7 in .243

I recently bought a Marlin XS7 in .243 Win. I have had it to the range several times and have not been able to get it to shoot to my satisfaction. Most of the literature available on this particualr rifle suggests that it really likes being floated.
But, when I "wollered" (technical term) my barrel channel out, I found out the synthetic stock is too flimsy and flexes up to touch the barrel if any pressure is put on it. If I attach my bipod and set the rifle down the barrel touches the stock.
Can I stiffen the stock? Or maybe just take more material out of the barrel channel? Or maybe...?
What do you think?

Thanks

If you have not glass bedded the action do so along with the first couple of inches of barrel. If the stock is flexing that much though i woul probably trash it and get a good one.
