trip to kmart almost goes bad

this evening i went to the local K-mart with my 7 year old son. as we trolled the isles for a few items we needed i noticed the clerks and customers from the front checkout area running in our direction. as one of them passed i was told that there was a man with a gun in front of the store! alarm bells went off and i started looking for cover for my boy and myself. after the crowd went by i saw a young black man run by and head for the back of the store. he did not appear to be armed but who knows?
keeping my son close to me i decided to go to the back of the store and try to exit at the garden center. moving as calmly as possible we came to a large group of clerks and citizens that were crying and using cell phones to call 911. i got the story from one of the older men there.
he said that two black men had jumped out of a truck and had words with two other black men at the front of the store. one of them produced a gun and waved it around. at that point the people at the registers took off for safer ground. one of the unarmed young men involved in this mess ran into the store to hide. my concern at this point was the armed guy coming in the store after him.
one of the clerks was shaking to the point i thought she would pass out. several of the men in that group looked VERY concerned. i remember thinking "These people look just like a flock of sheep."
i could feel the weight of my K40 Kahr on my hip and i knew i had two backup mags on my belt. my concerns were not for myself but for my son and of course the "sheep". i stopped and talked to my son. i told him if anything happened to me to hide. he said he already knew that. "What would you do if you saw someone with a gun shooting people in here?" i asked him. he looked up at me and said " I would not worry much dad." he said "I know you've got your gun and you will not let anything happen to me." "Besides" he said "I have seen you shoot, we would be alright." one of the men nearby over heard my son and moved over to us. "Are you armed?" he said in a hussed tone. i said "Yes i am, but do not call attention to me." he called his wife over and another couple over and then he asked if they could walk out with me. i told them sure and we went out the garden exitat the side.
out front the sheriff's cars were already coming in the parking lot. they stopped at the entrance and some went in. the other were questioning a young black man out front. just then a deputy got in his car and took off across the parking lot. they had spotted the truck that had the gun waver in it. the truck could not get past the lot exit botlleneck of traffic so the guy got out and ran. the deputies pursused him and after a short chase tackled him. i hung around long enough to find out he had a Glock handgun of some type on him and he was wanted for assualt already.
and people ask me why i carry a gun!!!!!1

Glad it worked out without anyone getting hurt.

I like your priorities - son first, anyone else that doesn't jeapordize (sp?) number 1, and then yourself.

Finally - I would hope that some of the folks that wanted you to escort them out came to rethink the reason for the fact that they weren't armed.

Glad the story has a happy and safe ending.
And a special kudo to your son.
At age 7, he already has his priorities in order.
Sounds like he's got a great teacher.
You should be very proud... :)

On the lighter side, you got to love it when your kid looks up to you as the best thing there is! The son knew he was safe because he was with his daddy! Plus, the kid seems to have been taught well about what to do. That is good.

Glad everything worked out for both of you and even for the "sheep."

Well played out.

Glad everything worked out for you BUT, it may be best if you teach your son and your other loved ones and friends never to mention in public that you are carrying.
If the wrong person overheard, i.e. bad guy, you could get droped before you can drop him, or worse yet, one of the sheep could over hear and scream and point "HE"S GOT A GUN!
You take it from there......
Concealed carry means just that.
I'm sorry if this seems like a rant or anything else but it's only intended to be advise.

Riddle,

You and your son reassure me that there is yet a chance for America.

Most sincerely, thank you, both for your story and the example of what an American family should be.

Well done, Sir.

i have already told him not to reveal the fact that i am armed. in this csae a quiet conversation between the two of us was overheard. i am glad that it did not backfire on me as you have pointed out. as he gets older i think he will be more careful about waht he says.
once when he was 6, in a food store i noticed he was tugging at his waistband. i suspected what was up so i called him to the restroom and after i opened up his coat i found he had a Colt Single action replica cap pistol in a plastic holster stuck in his waistband just behind his hip like i wear mine. i told him that was a poor idea. "Why?" he asked. because it is not a real gun but someone might think it is and you could get shot was my reply. his eyes got real big and he pulled out the whole rig and gave it to me. "here dad, could you carry this for me?" he said.
i took the gun and holster and threw it in our shopping cart. as we walked along he told me he had carried his little gun to "Watch my back" kids absorb everything. i told him when when he was old enough i would welcome his support.

Good story with a happy ending.

I find it particularly interesting how the sheeple in the know instinctively gathered around the one person that might save them if things went bad.

Hopefully it was an epiphany for at least one of 'em.

I can hear it now:

"Can we got out BAAAAAAAA-ack with you. Ther are BAAAAAAA-ad guys with guns in here. We are so scaaaa-ared, puh-puh-puh-puhleeze mister good citizen can we run out BAAAAAAA-ack while you protect us."

Glad to hear that you and your son are allright. Hoping that the situation will wake the sheep up. WE ARE THE PEOPLE, I'M A MAN NOT AN ANIMAL!!!!! I AM THE IMAGE OF THE CREATOR/THE PINNACLE OF EVOLUTION!!! Even umarmed I refuse to be a sheeple, but I choose to be armed. Hmmm, maybe that is why they no longer choose to support the "Bill of Rights"; because the BoR was created for The People not the Sheeeple.

Great story. Edge of your seat, thriller, hehehe. But really, I am glad that everything worked out for you and your son, and that you helped a few people see that guns can save lives(and thats what they usually do). Your son seems like a smart kid, hes got a good teacher, keep up the good work riddle, and Son of Riddle.

Oatka, you beat me to it.

Funny, the sheep find a man who is armed and flock to him for safety - they didn't run away, they came to him.

Instincts are always right. If we could only get the sheeple to stop watching that damn TV!

Great story!!! All's well that ends well!!!

Was this a PC K-mart? Did none of the clerks realize there are guns and ammo for them right at the gun counter? Did you or anyone reading this realize that? If their locked, the glass can be broken. Better to answer questions about the broken glass than to be rolled out on a gurney. Just something to ponder on your next "gun in the car" excursion.

Glad everything worked out alright, and that they caught the BG. He deserves some rock-breaking time for that stunt, from the sound of things.

I'm glad that nothing happened to you or your son.

Boy. Things HAVE changed. I remember carrying a cap pistol in a holster OPENLY when I was little. I did this all the time. My mom would whomp me one if I played with it while we were out, but if we were someplace where we knew everyone, it was okay.

This event makes me want to refer to my signature... so I will.

Glad you made it out! And very glad I read this...

Based on your conversation with your son, I will now instruct my daughter that the concealed pistol is officially "insurance"! That way, should such an incident occur we can discuss my insurance, not my pistol!

Thanks for sparking a great idea. Come up with a pet name for your pistol and only refer to it as "insurance" - then you can talk about it any time, anyplace!

Thanks again and keep up the good work... (grin)

I would have told the people to protect themselves, maybe they would have realized that the police aren't going to protect you, you have to do it yourself.

I am glad to know you made it out ok, and you should be damn proud of your son too!
