Trijicon, SUIT, or Aimpoint Comp M2?

I've decided to get a scope for my FAL, and the three most interesting ones are

- Trijicon Reflex II
- Aimpoint Comp M2/ML2
- Israeli SUIT

Can anyone compare and contrast among these, or even offer another. Is the ACOG worth $600?

I would like something that had quick target aquisition, but that I can use for a little target shooting too. No batteries are prefered and a bright sight picture is a must.

I would vote for the reflex if it is for a combat gun. If you ever have to use the gun in anger, by definition, things are worse than bad. You would need to leave the scope on because you don't know when the bad guys will show up (you can't ask for a timeout while you "turn on your gun"). If you have to leave the gun on, you will run out of batteries. Who wants those types of headaches when the world is falling apart. I'll take the Trijicon.

Just my opinion.

on an AR i really like the Aimpoint red dot of death[TM]
colocated with the iron sights
2 systems 1 zero
if the batteries fail you have a huge ghost ring
i prefer current fielded battle gear like the m68

if i required magnifcation the elcan or the acog
the Suits are pretty cheap and correct for the rifle

on another list a guy said he had one but wished he put the $ toward an elcan

Did you want any magnification? I put one of the Aimpoint 7000S 2X on my Desert Eagle and swear if I put a scope on my FAL it will be that same one. The infinte eye relief is really cool. I accidently left it on for about a week and a half and the battery is still going strong. I also have a COMP M2 for my Bushmaster M17S and that is very nice as well. The battery lasted about a year and that includes a couple of stints in the gunsafe where I left in on as well as a ton of range time. Also check if the COMP M2 will stand the recoil of the FAL. I contacted the company and was told that the COMP C 2X wouldn't withstand the recoil from the .50 AE but that the 7000 would because they were designed to be sturdier.

Homey don't play batteries. I have no doubt that the Aimpoint is a sweet sighting system...but personally I wouldn't want to have a battery driven aiming system on my rifle. Since the FAL's sights are set so low, you couldn't look through the Aimpoint in case of failure. As far as the SUIT goes, there was a guy in our IDPA league who had one on his DSA. His target aquisition was very slow at close range. But he would have had the edge at distances >100m. So I guess it leaves the Reflex. You might also want to check out the mini ACOG too.

I think you can get an illuminator for the SUIT, in which case it should function like a dot sight for close work (both eyes open). I have a Reflex 2 with the triangle of death on my AR and it is a true gem. The tip is sighted in to 100m so I am good for anything out to about 300m with only 3-4 inches difference in POA and POI. I kinda like ethnic optics on my foreign guns, so I'm planning on putting a Kobra on my AR, got a Russian 8x on my CETME, and want to get a SUIT for my Fal. But if you don't care, then a reflex on the DSA mount should set you up nicely. I think there is a quick detach mount for the reflex so you could use your irons anytime you wanted, while the SUIT hangs back far enough to require removal of the rear peep sight (though I think there is a flip up paratrooper sight or something that might fit). Let us know what you decide. Later.

I don't want much magnification: 0-2x would be ideal, but I would take a 3x, but no higher.

Some sights, like the Reflex are available with different sized dots. I can't see an advantage to a large dot unless you have eyesight problems, so I'm planning on a 4moa dot. The price on the Reflex is attractive... so is the size... and lack of batteries.

I went thru the same choices a couple of years ago for my AR-15.
After a lot of research and actually looking at both units, I decided to go with the Aimpoint. Here is the main reason. My dealer let me take both outside and look thru them. I had a hard time seeing the Reflex triangle in bright sunlight. The Aimpoint dot was hard to see at first, but I simply turned up the intensity. I have had good luck with my Aimpoint. I understand that they have update the M2 with a new diode which allows batteries to last for years, allowing the unit to be left on for defensive purposes. I don't think the battery issue is that big of deal. If you maintain your equipment, you routinely change the batteries. You change the batteries in your emergency flashlight, so why would the Aimpoint be different?
Both are good units. My suggestion is to try both and seen which meets your needs best. Good luck.

Is your Reflex mounted on an A2 or A3? I'm thinking of the reflex for my A2 but not sure what mount.

I thought that the new Aimpoint Comps had a new low drain diode. Supposedly, the battery life is rather substantial.

I like the SUIT, but for REALLY up close stuff, it could be a little limiting. You do not need to remove the rear peep to use it. It has a QD attachment, and if you have inch sights, then you just flip the rear down when using the SUIT, and flip it up when you take the SUIT off. You can convert your metric gun to use inch sights with just the purchase of the sights...about $30.

Go with the M2,no dubt.

Hi,

if you wanna use yr FAL for CQB the only choice you have is the M2,no dubt.

With the Reflex you loose the dot in any bright light situation and the SUIT is an old stuff, not comparable to the M2.

Just my experience, actual milage may vary...

I put a "triangle of death" Reflex II on the flat top of my M4 carbine, and noticed the washed-out-in-bright-sun thing (I shoot a lot of IPSC).

Got rid of that and replaced it with the ACOG NSN1...oh, man. What a difference. The top mounted conventional sight works great out to 20-25 yards for fast close work, but the optics are just amazing. From long shots in bright sun to 75 yard rabbits at midnight (backed up with a spotlight), easily the best scope I own. That includes the Leopolds, the Springfield third-gens...

The only thing I may change is to machine a custom rear sight to replace the oversized peep...a nice Ashley Express type would make those IPSC close targets run a bit faster.

I've got a Kobra red dot on my Mini-14 and am very happy with it. It's a little heavy but very durable and weatherproof. I very much like the fact that I have 4 different sight pictures to choose from. At $140 the price is right.

Another option to muck up your decision making process. Leupold has a new scope for military style rifles that is geared to intermediate range use. It is a 1-3x variable and has the built in option of an illuminated reticle. Leave the unit at 1x and you have the speed of the Aimpoint, crank it up to 3x for longer shots. If the batteries die (single AA) you still have the regular reticle. The reticle, by the way, is a style I like. It has a circle dot reticle, short range moving target just place the target in the circle use the dot for more precise work.

I haven't seen the scope yet as it is new, but I like what little I have seen so far.

Of what you mention I think I would lean toward the Aimpoint. I have used them and the batteries do last a long time and you could easily keep several on the rifle at all times. I really like the idea of the Trijicon Reflex but I have only limited experience with them and have concerns about what I hear about them (already addressed by others).

I hate the PRK!

I was going to invest big money into a nice AR and some combat optics, but I live in the PRK and am not able anymore. I still run into these threads time to time and dream of what I could have done. That being said, to the point...

I checked out the Leupold site to see if I could find info on the new scope. Sure enough, here it is. Enjoy.

Batteries definitely give you a funny feeling. Sure they should last forever, but as defensive shooting enthusiasts, we all dread it not working when it needs to. Murphy lurks about and he doesn't like us. That is what I like about this new Leupold. A little of both.

KPS, I have an A3 with the carry handle. I use the swan necked mount that places the REflex over the handguards and in line with the iron sights. Works well, but is heavy. I'm thinking about getting rid of the carry handle and using a QD reflex mount and a seperate rear sight (probably the DPMS unit) to save some weight and streamline the gun a little. I've never had a problem seeing the triangle in bright light, even during texas sumers, but I have the polarizing lens if necessary. I have had some trouble seeing the triangle if I am in a dark room aiming out at a bright background, but I'm not sure if thats something I'll ever come across in reality. It's nice not having to worry about batteries, but for a range gun, I'm sure it is not a big deal. Later.

Did they ever fix that problem with the reflex II lens where you see the triangle and then you see a shadow of the triangle in your lens? And you can't figure out which one is the right one to use?

That is why I sold my Reflex lens.

Perhaps I had a bad lens. But I thought that I heard of others with the same problem.
