Trigger reset issue

I was at the range about 2 weeks ago and attempted to do a 5 with 50 drill with both my SR40 and 40c. I had a problem with the trigger not resetting on every shot with both models while shooting one handed. No malfunctions when shooting two handed. I was shooting all the same ammo. Winchester white box 165 FMJ. Any ideas? Could it be something I was doing wrong like not releasing the trigger and allowing it to reset? It was pretty much happening at the same rate for both guns and left and right hand.

Wouldn’t you know if you weren’t releasing the trigger to reset? Just release the trigger completely to test that.

Yeah I would. I'm not sure why I would be releasing any differently than when shooting two-handed. Just was wondering if anyone else has ever encountered the problem and if it could be a shooter issue and not an issue with the firearm or ammo. Good chance I will be at the range tomorrow to see if I can sort it out. If not I'll probably have to contact Ruger.

Usually if it’s a shooter related issue it will cause a malfunction in feeding or extracting. If you’re saying it extracts and ejects the case completely but doesn’t reset the trigger that’s pretty bizarre as the motion of the slide to cycle fully should also reset the trigger.

When you are shooting one handed does the slide lock back on an empty magazine?
If it does not, the slide is short stroking one handed, which may have something
to do with the trigger reset problem.

Because when shooting two-handed, you have a firm grip on the pistol without needing the trigger finger to maintain control of the gun. Shooting one-handed, the one hand doesn't have any assistance from a support hand to grip the pistol, so the figers of the shooting hand have to do all the work. Unless you work actively and consciously at being able to clench the other fingers while NOT involving the trigger finger, contracting the muscles of the hand will tend to move all the fingers together. When shooting two-handed, your strong hand can relax ALL the fingers and the support hand still retains a solid grip on the gun.

I'm 98.327 percent certain your problem is simply that you are not fully releasing the trigger finger to allow reset.

Thanks for all the feedback. To TunnelRat: Yeah it was cycling completely except for the intermittent trigger issue. When that happened the round was still ejected and new loaded. Then I just needed to rack it back just a touch and the trigger would reset. I think it could be a shooter issue. I might find out tomorrow. Did some reloading this weekend.

I have no input other than if you google "Ruger SR40 fails to reset trigger", it is not an uncommon complaint. It seems to be related to the geometry of the trigger bar.
