Trigger Jobs

I don't know anything about them. I realize that people get them done to improve their trigger pull, but improve it how?? How much does it usually cost? Would you send it back to the respective company for the job or could a local gunsmith do it? Does it change the value of the gun at all? What mechanically is done to the revolver itself?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm really curious.

I have a few. The factory is a good place. www.cylinder-slide.com is a better place. The fitting, checking geometry, parts replacement and polishing is good for durability. Spring replacements aren't a trigger and action improvement. I would NOT trust this work to most local gunsmiths. You definitely notice a polished and tuned action compared to a boxstock revolver action.

A trigger job is something you want done by somebody that really knows what they are doing, Cylinder & Slide would be a good example.

Whether you need a trigger job is another question, if you shoot a revolver double action, a good trigger job is the best thing that can happen to your revolver. If you shoot mostly single action, the difference isn't nearly as noticeable, most S&W revolvers have a very good single action trigger pull out of the box, some other brands aren't quite as good.

To boil it down, if you shoot primarily double action, a good trigger job is worth its weight in gold, if you shoot mostly single action, it will help but it won't be a really big deal.

Once you really learn to shoot a revolver double action, you don't go back to single action.

If you don't use the factory then it's best to make sure the gunsmith is qualified to work on the revolver. While a S&W is relatively easy to work on, the old style Colt action is difficult. Not many gunsmiths are qualified to work on them and can cause more damage than improve anything. Get recommendations before you hand your handgun over for work to be done on it.
