Trigger - Finger Placement

All,

I shoot a Ruger Super Redhawk 44 mag. I have been shooting this revolver with the tip of my finger or pad on the trigger, however my trigger pull feels better and I feel more in control if I use the first joint of my trigger finger. I have never shot this gun with the trigger positioned in the first joint except for dry firing. Do you recommend trying it or just stick with shooting from the pad of my shooting finger?

I think the first joint feels better because the RSR factory grip is so small and I really have to back my finger out due to the small grip and it doesn't feel comfortable while shooting.

If you have to think about it, finger placement might screw you up.

Discovering how you naturally want to do it isn't very hard. It's what feels best.... :D

for DA firing I use the 1st joint of my trigger finger.for SA I usually use the pad....just me...I have arthritis in my shooting hand so it's out of necessity....whatever works...

I have been searching the archieves and noticed that some use the the pad of their finger and others use the joint to pull the trigger, and some base it on their particular gun. Interesting conversation on this topic.

On a trigger with more pull wouldn't it make sense to use the joint and on a gun with less pull it would probably make more sense to use the tip of your finger because of the sensetivity? Don't know just asking the question.

Some guns bite me if I use the first joint. It pinches the pad of my finger against the trigger guard. I usually use the pad to avoid this. Plus the army taught me to use the pad, hard to stop.

the main thing is to keep the bore axis aligned with your forearm.provided the backstrap of the grip is in the web of your hand, you have the freedom to try what's comfortable.
the SRH is a great fit for my hand, and the reason i traded off the otherwise handier redhawk.

Who wrote 'Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting'? Ed McGivern, wasn't it? He used and recommended pad for single action, first joint for double action, IIRC. Works best for me--particularly the bottom portion of the first joint, if I'm holding up high where I need to be.

I still believe the pad of the finger probably works better when in SA mode with a custom light trigger pull, but for the factory SRH trigger in SA mode the rear of the pad near the joint or the joint itself makes better sense and probably allows you to feel the trigger pull better than the pad near the tip of the finger. Don't know for sure.

I'm going to the range to do some experimentation and shooting using both applications. The goal is to solely work on smooth trigger pull using the pad of the finger near the tip of the finger, pad near the finger joint, and the finger joint itself.

I've tried both and usually use the joint for pull. I tried using the pad for SA but did not shoot better. I have long fingers and frequently in PPC I will rotate my hand slightly and hit the trigger on the center of the second pad (from the tip) which increases leverage on the trigger. If you have to shoot 60 rounds slow fire and you are staging a DA revolver, there is a lot of fatigue on the trigger finger muscle. Just keep score and use whatever gives you best accuracy.

Went to the range yesterday and discovered that while shooting my Ruger Super Redhawk off hand in SA mode, the pad of my finger nearest the joint really worked and gave me complete trigger control. Yesterday was the best I have ever shot at 25 and 50 yards.
