Tried Shiner Bock tonight....(Guiness)

I got some Shiner Bock on the advise of those here. It is pretty good. But, it is no Guiness. I guess I am just Irish at heart. I like my beer thick, black and foamy enough that I have to eat it with a spoon :)

Nothing better than a little head with my Guiness. ;)

So, tell me again, why is Shiner Bock so good? Am I missing something? Are they a pro-gun company or something?
 
Shiner is OK. The Bock doesn't sit too well with me though.

Bock is a German style dark lager, and it is of course not as heavy in malt as a English or Irish style Stout. Because it's a local beer with a long history in Shiner, Texas, serving the local German and Czech immigrants and their descendants, it has something of a cult following. It's not as full as the dark Munich style lagers you can drink in Bavaria or the Czech republic.

I like Shiner because they don't limit you to two samples when you visit the brewery, unlike Anheuser-Busch and Coors!
 
Shiner ain't as much fun as Guinness (Gaelic for Genius) for just drinking, but the thing I like about it is that I can drink it with a meal, which I just don't enjoy doing with Guinness.

Shiner is also a little more social, as Guinness is one of those brews very few of my friends can handle, and there aren't many women I know who can. Especially if those women are watching their figure. Of course, since I've been known to watch the figures of the ladies in question too, I'd say they may have a point.

Also, Guinness is best on tap, the can ain't bad, but the bottled stuff is so sharp it bugs me. I don't have that problem with Shiner.

Haven't had the opportunity to try any Shiners living as far north as I do...but was in an Irish Pub today in Michigan and tried the Irish Red. If you get a chance to sip some you'll be buying it by the pitcher full. Great stuff.

Well, as a former Texan I feel a little bad about this but here goes...Basically Texas beers suck. Shiner doesn't suck so it seems a lot better by comparison. I like Shiner and drank a lot of it. But it can't compete on a world class level. Now that the US is wealthy and sophisticated there are lots of imports and micros to choose from that are more interesting than Shiner, which is more interesting than the big six (Bud, etc).

FTIW if you want to try the ORIGINAL Bock beer then bug your distributor for EINBECKER BIER from Einbeck, Germany. I was turned into a teen-age alcoholic with this bier. Einbecker has been brewed for about 700 years now.

Damn, this is making me thirsty...

When you say Irish Red are you referring to Killians? One of my favorite "just sitting around drinking" beers. BTW, it's made by Coors in Colorado. The part that really pisses me off is that bars and restaurants charge imported prices for it just because it says Irish on the bottle.
 
I mean to try some Shiner the first time I see it. My favorite all time beer is Killkenny (Irish) had it last year in England. It is imported to Canada and Mexico but not here for some reason. Since I can't get it here My current favorite is a local Brew called Johnson's Brown Ale. Johnson's is a microbrewery in Charlotte. Serve it just above freezing, it has just the slightest taste of Honey and a flavor that won't quit. Besides that they sold stock to expand a few years ago and I bought, so the massive quanities I consume helps to keep the price up! Their Octoberfest will knock the socks off of you traditional German beer lovers as well. It is seasonal with them and they only sell it in the fall.
 
Ahh - Guiness! Pronounce the name with due reverence and drink it slowly, every sip a prayer (yes me grandma was from County Cork begorrah!). Truly said, German style Bocks are a different fermentation process and often quite higher in alcohol - about 7% is possible, against just under 5 for say - a draught Guiness. I've not yet had the honour and privilige of partaking of Shiner Bock but look forward to doing so let's see - about $5000 return to the US from here, pick up a Steyr Scout on the way - another $4000? and a few Shiner Bocks should fit in the budget.
If any of y'all be visiting Argentina I can recommend the 'Quilmes Bock', made locally - and for weaker souls the ol' Budweiser is generally available here, as is Heineken and other horse (expletive deleted) :)

Samuel Smith is a great Yorkshire brewery which makes a variety of ales and stouts. They make an incredibly smooth oatmeal stout which I love. Beer basically has two families: top and bottom fermenting. They are totally different and really can't be compared by saying one is better. They're just different.

In the early days of our country all the beer was top fermenting, in the English ale tradition. Top fermenting produces a slightly fruity flavor, a less stable beer, and one that is best drunk at about 65 degrees or a little cooler.

In the nineteenth century German immigrants brought bottom fermenting German lager styles, and now most Americans think of that as "beer." It's best drunk colder and is less subtle in its test. In this country we tend to brew light beers with less malty taste because of the warm climate and because Americans generally prefer sweetness to any other flavor.
 
This coming weekend I shall be in a land where they actually have this mythical elixir called "Shiner Bock". Sampling this highly rated golden brew shall be one of the first things I do once I reach my destiny.

An' iffin' it ain't as freakin' good as ya all keep swearin' it is, I'm a gonna open a family-size' can 'o whoop-a$$ on ya all. ;) :D
