Traveling across state lines with firearms. What’s legal?

It seems like I post this question every year about this time. I’m going Prairie dogging in South Dakota. I’ll be traveling through Illinois to get there and that worries me but there is no way around it. I’ll have my guns disassembled and locked in a large toolbox in the trunk of my car. The Ammo will be locked in a separate aluminum suitecase in the trunk.

I guess I’m doing it right. Am I missing anything? I’ll be taking an AR15 and a 308 along with a thousand rounds of ammo.

Any suggestions??

It sounds like you have everything in check, The sad thing is you shouldn't have to be asking this. I am starting to keep my .45 on me at all times, if the arrest me then its on.

Try not to speed too much. Don't give them a reason to pull you over.

You have everything in check, but if you are really worried remove the bolt from the gun as well.

I live in the land of Lincoln and I have not had any trouble transporting. I regularly go into Indiana to shoot.

If you are going through Indiana stay AWAY from fireworks stands. It is getting close to Independance day and the state troopers run stings sometimes. (No fireworks in IL)

I'm with GlockGuy.45, the constitution says it's ok, that's all I need. If they try to hook me up over a constitutional right, the fight is on.
