Transporting firearms in a vehicle (Ohio)

I have heard plenty of people tell me what the laws are on the transportation of firearms in vehicles. Ive heard things like guns in the trunk and ammo in the back or both guns and ammo can be in the trunk as long as they are locked in the trunk. And also how do I transport them in a vehicle that doesn't have a trunk?

The following has been excerpted from the Ohio Revised code, Title 29, Chapter 23.16. Please read this section in its entirety to be certain you are transporting firearms in a legal manner.

The gist of it is this:
§ 2923.16. Improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle.
(B) No person shall knowingly transport or have a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle in such a manner that the firearm is accessible to the operator or any passenger without leaving the vehicle.

(C) No person shall knowingly transport or have a firearm in a motor vehicle, unless it is unloaded and is carried in one of the following ways:

(1) In a closed package, box, or case;

(2) In a compartment that can be reached only by leaving the vehicle;

(3) In plain sight and secured in a rack or holder made for the purpose;

(4) In plain sight with the action open or the weapon stripped, or, if the firearm is of a type on which the action will not stay open or which cannot easily be stripped, in plain sight.

When I had a pick up truck, I used to carry my firearms unloaded inside the cab of my truck in cases which were in plain sight. All ammo was in a waterproof container in the bed of the truck.

Most concealed carry laws only apply to handguns and not long guns. You can not have long guns loaded.

I moved once and carried all the guns in boxes in the back of a pickup. All were unloaded. Handguns can be easily disguised in moving boxes. Long guns, I carried them in unloaded in the cab in plain sight. Depends how many you have of course.

I have never had problems transporting firearms as long as they are unloaded. I kept the ammo in the back of the pickup. Police really aren't interested in honest law abiding people and most couldn't care less how many guns you have. Long guns can be placed flat wrapped in a rug if that fits your situation.
