Transporting Firearms From Home To Range

What is the correct legal way to transport firearms from the home to the range? I have an extended cab pickup truck, so there is no trunck, and I do not havr a storage container in the bed of the truck? I am pretty sure these are federal laws, not state to state laws.

I know ammo and firearms need to be at seperate locations within the vehicle, but other than that I do not now.

Feedback greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Right on my hip, fully loaded - but then again that's because I carry a CCW permit. Can't say it enough that a CCW permit gives us a lot of flexibilities beyond just being able to carry.

Generally speaking I think you'll find that you must case your unloaded firearm so that no part of it shows and the case must fasten closed in some way. Can't store ammo in that gun case either - the gun and ammo must be in separate cases.

As far as where in your truck you carry the cases, I believe they must be positioned in such a way that the driver can't reach over and load 'em up. In the bed of the truck in some way would likely be your most legal choice - within a range bag or two perhaps - or within a bed tool box. You could probably get away with everything cased correctly and tucked behind the passenger seat though. That's where checking with your State and Packing.org will be the ticket. You should be able to pull up all the info you need tight here on-line.

But seriously - can you see where a CCW permit relaxes all those anal rules back to the way it should be in the first place? Get it if you can and throw your guns into your truck as you please... generally speaking.

It is a matter of state law. Until we know what state you live in, it is premature to give an answer to your question.

If you live in Ohio, you can simply put your ammo can in the back of your truck, open the action on your rifle and lean it against the front seat and off you go.

If you live in a state like Illinois or New Jersey I don't think that would be legal.

Give us a little more information so we can help you out.

Eric,
I also unfortunately live in NJ, the gunowners nightmare... To legally transport firearms in NJ, you must transport the firearm locked in the trunk (whether it is in a locked case, or it has an internal lock). The ammo must be stored separately from your firearms...I usually keep my firearms in the trunk, and the ammo in the backseat...In your case, with a pickup truck I would suggest keeping your firearms in the bed, and the ammo behind you or the passenger seat.. The only way to get a License to Carry in NJ is if you are retired law enforcement...I believe there are only 3,000 LTCs in our wonderful state out of all of the millions of people! They're about as rare as teats on a bull!

In NJ you need to put you gun in a safe with 3 padlocks in the back of your truck and your ammo in a safe chained to the back seat, you also need to drive to the range in a straight jacket:)

Seriously before I got my CCW in PA I asked a similar question, parking.org is a good reference. A best bet would be to get a good lockable case for your firearms, and a cheap lockbox for your ammo. Keep one in the front seat and one in the back. Keep your range receipts (if you pay for range time, if your a member and you don't pay fees keep your membership card handy) in your glove box. I don't think a LE officer would bother you if your did all that, but check the local laws, or check with a LEO. I think it would be dangerous to keep anything in the bed of your truck unless you got a cover.
