i am training to become a gunsmith at the foley belsaw institute and need some ideas on opening my own buisness or should i try and get hired at a gunsmithing shop

Or maybe work part time at several different shops. I have a suspicion, though I do NOT claim this to be fact, that different shops have different focuses and you might get more varied experience working for several different shops.

BTW, what's your impression of the schooling?

All the best,
Rob

Where are you going to school??

I am currently enrolled at Ohio State and am half way to my Associates in Ag Business
once thats finished I want to go to Gunsmithing school, I have heard three big names come up
Trinidad State College, Trinidad Colorado
Colorado School Of Trade
&
PA Gunsmith School, Pittsburgh

The first two, while most highly recommended are most likely not going to happen due to my current long term relationship that will probably involve marriage in the next 2-3 years. What are my other options in the area around Ohio?

I took the Foley Belsaw course also. To be honest, it really doesn't prepare you for many gunsmithing duties. There is much lacking in content. Machining, etc. Anyway, as Old Gaffer suggested, getting some apprentice time in would be wise. I'm planning on attending Trinidad State when I get moved.

The topic has been beaten to death. Do a search on this forum and on The High Road forum. There is a lot more to going into the gunsmithing BUSINESS than working on guns. Hobbyists who try to turn pro either learn to run a business, or they go broke.
