Training at matches

Having shot some IPSC, IDPA and FAS tactical matches, some seem to be cheap training for those of us that carry for "serious reasons". Are any of you involved in shooting matches that are geared to testing and refining your tactical and combat skills?

Describe some of the stages and how effective you think they are for testing/refining skills.
