Trailside vs. Ruger MK512?

So my gf's bday is coming up, and the last time I took her to the range, she shot 50 rnds in a 2" cluster!!! Didn't even go out of the second ring!! So she use to be very anti-guns and now, she wants a gun.

She only shoots 22's though because the recoil of anything larger bothers her.

So I'm debating between the TrailSide vs. the Ruger. I know the Ruger is a rock solid gun that you can give to your great grand kids, but I hear it's a tough gun to clean, and while most 22's are accurate enough, I think the Trailside might be a bit more than the Ruger in that dept.

But is it 2x as good? Anybody out there have both and can tell me from an "I own it" prespective?

Thanks,
Albert

I have a ruger 22/45, i love it, put a houge handall on it, and its close to a glock. what the heck is a 512?

no, the ruger isn't excessively easy to clean, but nor is it hard, and it will run dirtier than you can immagine.

Have someone show you once how to strip a Ruger MKII. It really is very easy once you know how to do it. It took me a couple of trys the first time. The manual from Ruger needs a little more detail, but is OK. If you have a knowledgable person selling it to you have them show you the "trick" with the reassembly. I would not let this deter you from buying one. I love my MKII Govt. Model.
The Sig sounds cool, but is more expensive and sounds like it might be having teething problems.

Have you considered a Browning Buckmark .22? I consider mine a joy to shoot.

I had a Ruger MarkII and never took it apart for cleaning in the 7 years. I just sprayed it out with automotive disc brake cleaner--worked great and only cost $2.00 a can.

I would get the Trailside, looks like a very nice and simple pisol only 30 parts. I had the Ruger but sold it because the inside was like a box of razor blades.

I'm saving for the Trailside.

Well, I've shot Ruger Mk II's for about 15 years and have absolutely nothing bad to say about them. Great guns for the money and more than good enough for plinking, practice and local comptition. Probably even serious competition depending what version you get.

I currently have a 5.5" heavy barrel T-512 and it's great. Best .22 I've ever shot, with one possible excpetion: the old MK II standard model I grew up shooting :) 4", tapered barrel and fixed sights but always realiable, accurate enough for rolling tin cans and light and handy to use. It had a natural point to it that few other .22's seemed to have, including my current 5.5" gun.

Ruger has their 50 year comemorative version of the standard model and, for a plinker, I'd give it a serious look. Same specs as my old standard one was but with a stainless bolt nad a tastefully done Ruger crest engraved on the reciever. Cost was only around $200 or so new too. A great bargain for a great gun.

The Trailside does look very nice but I haven't shot or handled one so I can't really say for sure. As a Ruger shooter though, I can recommend them without any reservations.

P.S. I'm an absolute pig with my Ruger. Since I just plink with it, it's not high on my maintenance list :) I've never stripped it and rarely clean it and it just keeps chugging away. I wipe out the action and/or hose it out occasionaly and once in a blue moon run a brush through the bore and it still functions and shoots like a champ!

Thanks guys. I will go tomorrow to take a compare, side by side of the two.

I'll take a look at the browning buck's as well. They are great also.

I've shot MANY rnds through a Ruger, so as far as reliability, it's not an issue.

I'll let you know tomorrow when I take a good look at all three.

Thanks.
Albert

I have A Ruger Mark II bull Barrel, a buck mark Camper. Both are good guns, very accurate. I am a small person with small hands so the Camper fits better, well balance
on my hands, therfore, I shoot better with it. Since I droped A Vol Quartsen kit on my Ruger, It keeps jamming very often. Now it is in the shop still. The Trailside is nice looking, well balance in my hand, and lighter too so It will be next in my list of new guns. You should go to local range rent and shoot both Ruger and Browning. Then decide on what you really like base on your own experience with them. I think, "Different stroke for different folks." I like the Browning better and it does not mean the Ruger is a bad gun. It is just personal preference. Happy shooting.
