Sure to be exploited against firearm owners.

Girl, 5, shoots two-year-old dead in northern Canada
Updated 10:48 PM ET April 29, 2000
MONTREAL (Reuters) - A five-year-old girl shot a two-year-old boy dead when the children were left alone with rifles at a remote native hunting camp in northern Quebec, police said Saturday.
The shooting occurred late Thursday after two men from the Cree village of Chisasibi, east of James Bay, returned on their snowmobiles from a geese hunting trip.
"The hunters put their rifles by the door of the (cabin) and two children were playing inside," Quebec provincial police spokeswoman Isabelle Gendron said. "They returned outside to get more supplies from their snowmobiles. Then they heard the gun shot."
The men rushed back into the cabin to see the boy's body on the floor with a gunshot wound to the head, and the girl holding a rifle, Gendron said. The boy's body was airlifted out by helicopter on Friday.
Police were investigating and had not released any names. Gendron said the children were related, but were not siblings.

So, what do you think should happen to these guys?

Five year olds cannot be trusted around loaded guns and it takes little effort to be safe.

While it might be exploited, the blame is on these idiots. If you give your enemy ammunition and an opening, who is at fault>

I would tell you what should be done but it is Sunday.
If these two had an ounce of sense nothing would have happened.

This is just horrible. What is also horrible is that it could have been prevented.

Unfortunately, these incidents are used to ruin the image of all gun owners.

- “geese hunting” with rifles? Not shotguns?
- “girl holding a rifle”? After shooting the boy, inside a closed room?

Were these guys hunting geese with a .22? I would think the sound and
recoil of a shotgun or hunting rifle (inside a cabin) would be enough to make
ANY 5 y/o drop the gun.

This *is* a tragedy, but something seems a bit weird here. Opinions?

There is indeed something unusal here. If the event did take place, the men were probably Native Americans. I am not going to get involved in a discusion of their gun handling practices. It is a matter for them to decide amongst themselves.

It does sound odd and if the article is accurate : the cops better be checking for insurance policies.
Before rushing in though, remember how often the press gets the "minor" details wrong.

Not necessarily. We had an incident here recently where an attorney lost his legally carried concealed weapon when it fell out of his pocket and lodged in a seat somewhere (I think it "might" have been a school auditorium). In the news article it was described as an "automatic revolver". I have been trying for a long time to find one of those but with no luck.

The press gets things wrong quite a bit when it comes to firearms. But that is not to say that there may have been something else going on. If there was, I hope the authorities find out.
