Tradition's Buckstalker Rifle

Cheap 870

Blackpowder season is a week away here in Ohio & I need a muzzleloader.
A local gun shop has about 6 blued Tradition Buckstalker guns with a Tradition 3x9 scope for $220. I might be able to talk them down a little. I would like some opinions on this gun.
I know theirs better muzzleloaders to be had but for a gun I'm probably only gonna shoot 5 or 6 times a year I just want to get by as cheap & reliable as I can.

The Traditions Buckstalker is a reliable and good shooting rifle. It's basically the same as the Traditions Pursuit except with a 24" barrel that's 2" shorter. The Pursuit has been a popular and well proven model for many years and the Buckstalker is just one of the new variations.
They're made with and without sights and in either nickel or blue, but they all have the quick change accelerator breech plug.
As long as you like the way that the rifle shoulders, the trigger pull weight and the clarity of the scope, then you should be happy with it. :)

As was said on 'Smokey and the Bandit':

"We got a long way to go and a short time to get there"!

FWIW , With season opening Jan. 7, not an impossibility, but you've got your work cut out for you getting any new BP tuned by the start of our season.

As arcticap said, the Buckstalker is a good shooting rifle.

Not so sure of the quality of the Tradition 3x9 scope nor the quality of mounts included in the set up.

That's one thing I'll have to check on (the trigger).Might have to do a trigger job in the garage.
I'm sure the scope will make it through this season. Supposedly it was bore sighted at the factory so it shouldn't take many shots to get it sighted in.

I've had muzzleloaders before (T/C hawken, cherokee,& firestorm) but either traded or sold them. But I kept all the accessories. I have some Winchester 260gr. Platinum Tips,Hornady 250gr. XTP's. Probably just use one of those behind 90gr. of triple 7. I have pellets already but not a fan of them. I had bad luck with them in my firestorm.
I also have something they don't make anymore, T/C 50cal. maxi-hunter 470gr. & maxi-ball 460gr. But I won't use those.

Used to use the maxi's also and believe there's still a pack or three down in the basement.
Those chunks a lead would just knock a deer inside out and were plenty accurate also. :D

Great to hear the Buck Stalker is a good Rifle. I bought the ready to hunt kit at Walmart for 99 bucks .....yeah thats what I said when I had the guy price check it for me, maybe a mistake on their part, but my gain, hehe! And after my 35 dollar christmas gift card, I walked out with it for 65 smackers out of my pocket. I haven't shot it yet, but can't wait to do so.

Tell me about this pellet problem you had? I was going to use the pellets. I have been thinking alot about it lately and seems to me loose powder should do better. Because they say don't crush the pellets so in theory you have dead space around those pellets under the bullet. I may be way off, I'm a super newb at BP. But with ya'lls help I'm learning fast

Yea you got a great deal. One of the gun shops I stopes at had the gun kit with scope & acc. for $299. I just got mine last night for $234 out the door. The trigger has no creep & the pull will do (not to heavy). The guy at the shop said he thinks Bushnell make the scopes for Tradition. One thing about it is the eye relief (I like a lil more). But it'll work for now. One thing my didn't come with the accelerator breech plug it has a socket looking tool to remove the plug. So maybe I got an older one. It all so has a green synthetic stock.
About me having trouble with using pellets, I'm believing it was more the guns fault then the pellets fault.

yeah mine has the tool to remove the plug also, no big deal for me though I plan to make up a little pack to carry all the stuff in. This will be my sole hunting rifle next season, and maybe the spots with shorter shots I will take the Old Army. I have this thing of liking to use different stuff every year to take deer with. I guess its a challenge for me.
