traditional U.S. made muzzleloaders

I'm considering getting a traditional muzzleloader for hunting this year. I'm looking for a U.S. made gun for under $300. Any ideas?
 
Used Lyman Great Plains Rifle.

Although the T/C Hawken is a very good gun also.

Kinda can't make a bad decision here.
 
Used would be nice, but I don't have much time to spend looking. I have not had much success finding reasonable deals on used guns anyway.

Look on the gun auction sites, you can have one in a week. Auction Arms, Guns America, Gun Broker.

Just bought a used Thompson Center "New Englander" in mint condition for $150.00 at a gun show. Saw more than one T.C. for under the price that you listed. You just have to get out there and hunt one up. Most dealers don't buy these as they claim that there is a limited market and quote;

That can be your gain as there are always a few available and at a reasonable price. Why does it have to be U. S. made? I would not have a problem with Traditions or Cabelas. Staying under your $300 might be a problem. Good luck and you should not have a problem but you got to get out there and look.
 
A used T/C is about your only option. I saw a few used T/C's for $200 or less at the gun show just yesterday. Not sure why you want a US-made rifle but consider the offerings from Lyman. As stated above they are sourced from Investarms of Italy and are very well made. My .54 GPR has proven to be unbelievably accurate to 100yds.

I own the Lyman Great Plains Rifle as well as the Thompson Center Hawken. Both are excellent rifles but the Lyman is made in Italy. Be very careful buying a used muzzle loader. A friend of mine bought a used T C Hawken and found out the bore was shot even though the rifle looked like new. Many owners are lazy and do not clean them. His only option was to buy a new Green Mountain drop in barrell. Now it shoots fine but when he purchased it the rifle would not shoot worth a nickle.
