Trading advice needed-S&W mod 53 for 357

I've decided to trade my S&W model 53 22 cal for a S&W 357. The model 53 is in good condition, has the inserts and I have a box of 22 Rem Jet ammo. I like the idea of having the option of shooting regular 38 ammo and I think a 4 in barrel would be in order for target shooting and home defense.

I could use an education on what to look for when acquiring a used S&W 357 and what would be considered fair when trading with a dealer. Thanks.

According to the 22nd Edition of the Blue Book of Gun Values your Model 53 .22 Jet was manufactured from 1960 to 1974 and may bring a premium price upwards to $735 or even much more. I would think that any dealer would like to scalp you for your M53. I would try for an even trade on a new .357 S&W and if not an even trade for a like new one. Maybe even a little to boot your way. That dealer is going to ask top dollar for it when you leave the shop and will likely get it. Why don't you try selling it first for cash, then buy what you want. You will have to check your state laws for selling it to an individual. You stand to loose a lot on this trade if you are not careful. Good luck and good shooting. Think about keeping it!

Your model 53 is a highly desirable collector. Please don't trade it in. Sell it outright, and you'll have enough to buy two .357s plus ammo.

A very poor trade on your part that a dealer will jump all over himself to get at you. Never trade a collectable for a common item. As mentioned above you can get enough from the sale of your M53 to buy two .357 magnums.

Best way to sell it?

Thanks for the advice. Would you recommend an online auction like gunbroker.com?
