Trading 1911 for Beretta 92FS....

Hey everyone! I have a question that only gun guys could answer and was looking for some input.

I currently have a Springfield-Armory Loaded 1911 in stainless steel that I bought brand new a few months ago. It has 300 rounds through it with no failures. I was considering trading it for a new Beretta 92FS Vertec Inox. My main reason being 45 ACP being so expensive, it gets hard to shoot the 1911. I also have a Glock 19, so maybe it would be easier buying just one caliber? I currently can't afford to buy the Beretta outright.

I'm just wondering what you guys would do. Should I trade the 1911, or keep it?

What would I do?

Well I have a strict no sell/trade policy these days. In my younger years I sold and traded away so many guns and came to regret it years later. My advice is to keep the 1911 and save for the Beretta. Or, save for a .22 conversion kit for the 1911.

Handload your .45 ammo.

I couldn't afford to shoot .45 ACP (or do much shooting at all) if I didn't handload most of what I shoot.

Those are both nice guns.

I assume you know the Beretta and won't have a problem with its size and long, heavy DA trigger pull. That's the reason I no longer have my Berettas although they were perfectly reliable. I even had a Vertec and had to really focus to keep the first shot on.

With that caveat, it's entirely up to you. Both are classics.

You don't say if the trade is even up or not. If it is, and you like the Beretta and its trigger, I would do it if I were you. Vertecs will never be common, and you will always find another 1911.

If you plan to shoot it a lot and don't want to reload, that's another reason to make the deal, because the ammo cost would be a factor.

I wouldn't take a big beating from a dealer trading a perfect Loaded Springfield, unless you have your heart set on a Vertec.

Both very nice guns. I'd try to own them both. Everyone needs at least one 1911. You can get the 9mm and shoot it most of the time, reserving the .45 for occasional time at the range. Best of both worlds.

As suggested earlier, a.22 conversion kit fortune 1911 is another way to go. They shoot very well and ammo is as low cost as you're going to find.

I would not trade, you already have an excellent 9mm. I would save up if I wanted to add the Beretta. I would not want just one caliber due to ammo shortages.

I wouldn't trade a 1911 for a Beretta 92FS, but it's really your prerogative to own what you want. I think you already have a good 9mm with the Glock 19. There are ways to save money on .45ACP ammo, including reloading yourself or making friends with people at gun clubs who reload. The Fed Champion aluminum case and Perfecta .45ACP at Wally's is good range ammo to punch targets, which is reasonably priced.

Back when I started shooting (middle nineteen sixties), I was so poor that the only way I could afford to shoot was to handload and cast my own bullets. I still handload and shoot only my own cast bullets. When doing such, the cost is not a significant factor. Nowadays however, sources of lead may be a problem in some areas.

Yeah, if it weren't for reloading, I never would have gotten into shooting much either.
If the cost of .45s is the motivating factor for trading a 1911 for a 92, that's easily cured.
Personally I wouldn't trade one 1911 for all the 92s in existence.
Still can't understand why our military did.
If they wanted a big, clunky higher capacity DA in 9mm, why not one of the home grown S&Ws?

Maybe the single action operation was a concern, same as for the 1911.
Wouldn't have to necessarily carry with an empty chamber to avoid the risk of ill trained folks having shooting "errors."

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I guess I'll just keep the 1911. Found out I would get $25 in addition to the Beretta after I trade my 1911, which means that my 1911 (which is covered in wear marks) is still worth more than a brand new Beretta. There's no way I'm trading my Glock; as that's my carry gun. I'm just afraid of the inevitable scenario when I'll need to fit a part to the 1911. I'm no gunsmith. Lol. More parts available for the 1911, though. Thanks again for the replies! :)

We---quite literally---don't know how much longer we'll have to freely purchase various guns almost without restriction.

I'd keep both. But then again, I always do that. :D

I prefer the 92 to the 1911.

That said I also have adopted a pretty strict no-sell no-trade policy that I've only violated a time or two for good reason (like getting rid of a gun because it just flat doesn't fit my hand (Sig SP2022) or isn't fun to shoot (Smith 642)).
