Trade-in price for a S&W 5906 9mm at gun shop?

I recently purchased a Smith & Wesson model 5906 9mm about 2 months ago. I am going to trade it in for a SW99 (.40 CAL) at my local gun shop. My question is what type of trade-in price can I expect for my 9mm? I paid $600 for it and have put 200 rounds through it. It is in perfect like new condition.

I see that used handguns sell for slightly less than a new gun in the shops. But what price do they pay to obtain those guns? Any help would be appreciated thanks!

The "rule" is that they have to pay less than wholesale if they want to stay solvent. In my location, the reputable dealers strongly encourage selling guns yourself. If you really want to trade it, the price seems to be about 50 to 75 % of wholesale. But that is peculiar to my area.

I would encourage you to keep your 9 as a second gun. If you do want to get rid of it, you'll probably do much better selling it privatly.

Ouch Jankord, Looks like you will be joining the "buy high - sell low" among us. I'd figure out a way to keep it as I have the 5904 and can't part with it.
If ya gotta do it bend over and take a deep breath cuz it comin :D :D

Around here (OKC) you probably wouldn't be offered more than $400 for it by a gunshop. Ask about putting it on consignment instead. You might do better since gunshop doesn't have any money invested in it and you can probably get 85% of selling price

Around here (northern CA), they also encourage the consignment route ... they come right out and say: 50% of the shelf price as a trade-in ... the consignments seem to run between 80% for shops that move things fast to 85% for the slower ones.

I got $500 for my 5906 but also had 3 hi-caps with it. Mine was well broken in (by myself) but still had few surface scratches and I always kept it clean.

Jankord,
Unfortunately many S&W handguns seem to depreciate rather quickly, even with "high-cap" magazines. It's a good thing for ME though. The 5906 is an extremely common firearm, and the used gun market is flooded with 'em. That is is not to say that they are bad guns. It used to be a very common police sidearm. I like them a lot. I wouldn't expect to get more than $400.00 for it though. My advice is keep it or sell it to a stable individual. Dealers won't likely offer you much for it.
