Trade in PPK for G23???

Hi all,

I am currently rethinking my CCW situation. I currently carry a Walther PPK in .380. I love the weapon as far as concealability however the anemic cartridge has always bothered me a little (but better to have gun than none at all in SD situation.

Anyhow I am considering trading it in for a G23 in .40 S&W. I figure if I have to shoot somebody in SD I want to make sure he assailant goes down "for good" rather than just wound (for post attack legal purposes in court etc., as well as succesfully stoping the aggressor)

Would the G23 be a wise upgrade for PPK?
Also, can G23 take a "drop in" .357 Sig barrel w/out any smithing?

Note as I am always on a tight budget I would have to do a trade in so having both is not an option.

Thanks for your opinions

In my opinion, G23 would be harder to hide (it is quite a bit bigger) but 1)recoil would be less 2)reliability *might* improve 3)cartridge and magazine capacity would improve 4)accuracy would stay about the same for combat purposes...hmmm. The only question is: can you still carry it? If "yes", I'd say go for it.

I agree with oleg concerning the concealability of the two, but i do not like the .380. Either a 9mm or a .40 would be a better caliber. I carry a G27 off duty and find it quite concealable. Another option would be the sig 239.

Ever consider a Kahr K9,MK9,or MK40. These guns are designed for concealability. Note though they are heavy; a new plastic version came out, I have no experience there though you might want to check it out. Kahr has a very good reputation. I have the K9 and a G23, both excellent. But when I carry, it's definitely the K9. Good Luck

Thanks for info all.

Does anybody know about the G23 .357 Sig "drop in" barrel issue?

Can it be done? Can you convert a .40 S&W G23 to a .357 Auto caliber simply by swapping barrels?

Thanks again.

orsogato; I believe the 357 sig barrel is a simple drop in as far as the G-23 is concerned. You can even use the same mag. I'm sure somebody will confirm this. I'd dump the PPk in a heartbeat! G-23's are sweet guns. Best, J. Parker

I have both the 23 and the PPK. Yes, the 23 packs much more power, but is bigger and heavier.

What I have found is that which is better depends on how you carry. If you carry around the waist (as I do with my 23) or in a shoulder holster, the added bulk of the 23 is not going to make much difference. However, if you carry in an ankle holster (as I carry my PPK) or in your pocket, a 23 will not work for you; Unless you're a really big guy, it just won't fit.

Finally, keep in mind that buying a new gun will also require new holsters, cleaning materials, and possibly some rather expensive hi-cap clips.

The Glock is a superb weapons system, take a look at the sub compact model before you buy your .40 cal. The 26/27 are both reliable powerful handguns and the 9mm has the advantage on an extra round.

A quick change of the barrel is the only thing you need to change from .40 to .357. The mags will work with both calibers.

You won't find any factory .357 barrels, since Glock won't sell them. You'll have to deal with aftermarket stuff.

If you only want factory parts, buy a G32 and get a factory G23 barrel for it instead.

You could change a G23 to 357 if the frame has the re-enforcements. Some 2nd generation and all 3rd generation Glock 23s have them. To check remove the slide assy from frame. Look at forward part of frame where slide contacts it during recoil. Check to see if there are metal inserts on both sides. If so according to Glock it is ok.

If you want to step up from the PPK, and you're also on a limited budget, I'd consider the KelTec P11 or P40. They're not much bigger than the PPK, but they pack 9mm or .40S&W power. There is nothing wrong with the Glock 23, but it is considerably bigger than your current carry. Have you looked at the Glock 26/27 guns?

Hey there isn't any stepping "up" from a PPK, there's only stepping "away"...

Have a little sympathy for us Walther fans--everybody's always dissin' our guns ;-)

Gremlin; Actually, my very first handgun was a Walther PPK in .380. Imported by Interarms I believe. I worked in the San Francisco bay area and carried it around all the time. Boy, if I would have gotten caught with that pistol they would have thrown away the key! I'm no longer a resident of that wonderful state. I can now carry legally and I'm just two states up! I don't get it! Anyway, it was a real nice little gun. I think I traded it for a 1911 Springfield and haven't had a .380 since. Nice gun none the less. Best, J. Parker

Gremlin: If you (or anyone else) is such a Walther fan, you really ought to check out the P99. I have one in 9mm, and I like it better than the Glock 19/23.

I haven't shot the G27, but have seen the specs on the Glock website. It doesn't look like the G27 is all that much smaller than the G23 (which I have and really like). It looks like about 1/2-inch shorter in width and height, but no slimmer. Is there really much difference between the two?
