May be working a trade for a pinned and recessed model 27 is it worth trading a Springfield GI 1911 for

Yes.

Notice how I skipped over all the 'depends on the condition of the guns' stuff as though it didn't matter. Well it matters a lot and could tip the balance in favor of keeping the 1911 but unless the 27 is pretty bad it's still a trade I'd make. Plus I'm feeling less wishy washy than usual today.

(That said I try like the dickens to keep them both-see cheapshooter's #1 rule of gun ownership. I like it.)

Too many variations in the model 27 - to say yes, but its probably a good deal - but condition on both guns is always significant.

Model 27's were originally made in 3 1/2" and 5" barrels ....then the 4", 6", 6 1/2" and 8 3/8" were available soon after ....and they were made with Blued or Nickel finishes....

In general, today - the 3 1/2", 4" or 5" ...are all sought after models and can be easily $ 1,000 - $ 1,250 especially if they are in excellent shape / with Nickel typically bringing about $ 100 more over a blued version ( at least in my area). The 6" models in my area bring about $ 150 - $ 200 less / and the 8 3/8" models about $ 300 less...

S&W eliminated the cyclinder counterbore and pinned barrels in the 27-3 engineering revision...in around 1982 / so the gun you're looking at is older than that.

What "Springfield GI 1911"? If you meant the new Springfield Armory Inc. model they call "GI", I agree and say, "Yes".

If you mean the Model 1911 made at the original Springfield Armory c. 1914-1915, then we would be back to "it depends" and condition. Also whether the S&W is a "Model 27" or an earlier gun.

The shorter the barrel the higher the price. Big difference between 27s with a 3.5" barrel and a 6" barrel. How long a barrel are you looking at?

I gave up on ever being able to buy a 3.5-inch Model 27. So I recently bought the understudy, the 4-inch Model 28.

Yeah, the Highway Patrolman is not as pretty, but it is just as much fun to shoot. And I just love the older S&Ws with the case-hardened triggers and hammers. Perhaps it just helps my self esteem to think that something aging is still desirable

Trade a Springfield 1911 for a Model 27? Yes, yes, and YES! Depending on how much boot you will be asked to give, however.
